And I'd think that the comparison should be other similarly sized communities, not the state as a whole, as the major metro areas *for the most part* maybe not Memphis, have the higher populations, salaries and likely education.

And with the population shifts, recent data would be different than data from a decade ago.
OK, then let's compare Cumberland County to the counties in Tennessee that have around the same population. The statistics are from 2013, the latest available from census.gov.

county...population...% HS grad...% college grad...median household income...# bank branches

Hamblen...63,036...80.4...16.0...$39,596...23
Cumberland...57,985...80.9...17.4...$37,188...19
Coffee...53,623...82.4...18.0...$37,618...20
Roane...52,748...83.7...17.3...$42,223...13
McMinn...52,626...80.2...14.3...$39,410...17
Dickson...50,575...84.2...14.2...$44,318...23

Of those counties, Cumberland County is a fast-growing county, but it's not exactly attracting wealthy, highly educated retirees. Not that there's anything wrong with that; I live in an area of similar demographics and love it. I'm just pointing out that all these retirees flocking to Cumberland County aren't necessarily bringing lots of cash and fresh ideas. As 2mares pointed out, they tend to be rather insular anyway. I know of some retirees at Fairfield Glade who refuse to step foot in Crossville and instead do all their shopping in Farragut (Knoxville).

At any rate, I apologize for taking this thread on a little tangent. I just wanted to point out that just because Cumberland County attracts lots of retirees from the North, it doesn't mean that it's gay-friendly, wealthier, more educated, etc.

We were told by the salesman at Fairfield that the area was good for retirement because it had less snow than other areas. Wish we had bought the three bedroom home on the golf course a few years back for $100,000. It would probably be $300,000 now. We were on vacation in the timeshares there. I don't think we are a good fit for Fairfield though. I sensed an attitude there the last time we visited. I'm just a country girl. I stay away from attitudes. Nice place to visit and a beautiful area though. Two major good places to eat at the park buffets were great. One had a lake with a police type duck. He was a lot of fun.

The country food was authentic country cooking you won't find at many places. It was like going home to Mom's cooking.

Basically, I want to make sure if I go get a job, my boss won't be preaching Jesus at me if I can't tell him all about my awesome lesbian adventures and all the pretty gay men I know without him gritting his teeth and showing discrimination toward me: I asked because this has happened and finally, we don't have to tolerate bigotry anymore but I don't feel like walking in to a situation where it is so socially engrained on such a reclusive and publicly abandoned societal group. That would be about as ignorant as walking down the street in Detroit selling Rolex watches.

Like I said as long as you mind your own business people will mind theirs. It's the code of the hills LOL. If you don't like Jesus then don't move to Jesus country. The same way I would tell someone that if they did not like open lifestyles then don't move to California.

You don't have to tolerate bigotry but at times it is better to ignore it rather than fight it with bigotry.
