They could start by exempting anyone drawing Social Security.

I'm in favor of repealing the Hall Tax, but why should someone drawing Social Security be exempt? Suppose a person drew Social Security, but also had $1,000,000 per year in interest and dividend income. Should he/she be exempt from paying the tax because a small portion of his/her income is Social Security?

Unfortunately ... the direction we are heading ... social security and medicare will be restricted in the future ... with the bureaucrats determining who gets it ... and who doesn't.

The Hall Income tax exemption for people over 65 has been raised to $37,000 of total income yearly. In other words if you make less than 37K the tax does not affect you.

Under Senate Bill 32, the annual Hall Income Tax standard income exemption for taxpayers 65 years of age or older would be $37,000 for single filers and $68,000 for joint filer taxpayers beginning in January 2016.

The Hall income tax is a Tennessee state tax on interest and dividend income from investments. It is the only tax on personal income in Tennessee, which does not levy a general state income tax.
