I noticed on Sunday night that the Dollar General on 1945 N Washington was cleared out and closed.

DG has been multiplying like jackrabbits around here so I'm not surprised to see one close. They just opened 2 new stores in Cookeville in the last few months, one on East Spring and one on West 12th.

That N. Washington Dollar General moved north by about half a mile; it's just north of the high school.

Maybe they needed more space, but they're going to lose out on a lot of foot traffic. Lots of families are losing a convenient option. Not that the Dollar General Corporation cares about that, though.

Yeah that old location seemed so perfect, right there in that little shopping center with a Latino grocer and the Merita bakery outlet and right next door to an apartment complex. But the new one is much larger which I guess is more important for Dollar General.

Anyway, there are now 13 Dollar Generals in "Cookeville" (well, within the Cookeville ZIP codes):

403 W Broad St
Cookeville, TN 38501

878 W Jackson St
Cookeville, TN 38501

185 S Jefferson Ave
Cookeville, TN 38501

2436 N Washington Ave
Cookeville, TN 38501 (the one that replaced the one at 1945 N Washington)

1068 E 10th St Ste F
Cookeville, TN 38501

1705 Gainesboro Grade
Cookeville, TN 38501

1742 E Spring Street
Cookeville, TN 38506

379 W Main St
Cookeville, TN 38506 (Algood)

1781 S Jefferson Ave
Cookeville, TN 38506

1999 Burgess Falls Rd
Cookeville, TN 38506

7020 Roberts Matthews Hwy
Cookeville, TN 38506 (White County)

It’s hard to keep an accurate count of these stores, because they keep popping up so fast. By my count, there are at least 12 DG stores in CumberlandCounty, with at least 2 more under construction. One of the two is badly neededin city of Crab Orchard. The other is causing an uproar locally because it isbeing built on the site of a 1930s “homestead” era house on HWY 127S.

I understand the appeal of having a store with (most of)your needs nearby, especially in highly isolated and/or rural communities, but Iwonder if this rapid expansion of the company will be futile, and if many of thenew stores will end up being shuttered in the coming years.

Oh no....DG is taking over the world, one store at a time. They're even plunging into urban markets as "corner shops" geared toward the pedestrian urbanite and Millennials with their DGX brand....which is a brilliant strategy in my opinion.

It sure seems like that. When we drove up to Ohio for Christmas, most of the trip was away from the interstate. Our running joke was "Well, it's been about 10 minutes since the last one, so it must be time to see a Dollar General"!

About 10-15 years ago CVS did the same thing, opening stores everywhere. Now they are expanding into medical insurance.

I was told that there may be another ECD announcement coming in March related to an employer entry/expansion in the area. My guess would be, from what little information I received, that it would be a manufacturing concern perhaps going to the Highland Business Park.
