This is from Nashville's WTVF NewsChannel 5. I wonder what the "5 or 6 other companies" are that are looking at expanding in Cookeville that Randy Porter mentioned.

Great news for the area but I wonder where new housing developments will be. Will they start popping up in the rural area's around the new industrial park? Can you imagine if that area grows into it's own community with more business, shopping and restaurants?

Not sure exactly where but I know of one new residential development on Ditty Road already. And yes, I expect you will see lots of development in the area of the I40 interchange.

I don't expect a gazillion homes to be built in the area....seasonal employees at Academy probably make $10-12/hour while full-time employees make less per hour with benefits...or that's how most distribution center compensation scales work. Lots of commuters will trek to Ficosa.

Agreed. However, I think there will be an increase in home construction in the area. These 2,000+ jobs aren't all grunt labor, and the new factories will spur other businesses to come to town, too. The new I-40 interchange, in particular, has the potential to attract even more investment to the area. Today's H-C is reporting an increase in home construction so far this year, and it specifically mentioned a flurry of new home permits for the Baxter area which is good to see.

Also in today's paper (and not on the online edition for some reason) is Chamber of Commerce CEO George Alford's message about the opening of the Ficosa and Academy plants this week. However, in his article he casually mentioned that Randy Boyd, head of the Tennessee Department of Economic and Community Development, also visited an existing industry in Cookeville which is planning a "major expansion including a large number of quality, new, technology-based jobs." Any idea what that industry is?

There is some newer housing developments in that general area that borders 40 to the north, 135 to the south and east, and 56 to the west. There are also a few large wooded lots that are currently being cleared for some kind of development. With that new large industrial park smack dab in the middle I have a feeling that general area will continue to grow faster than most other areas.

I heard from yet another person, this time someone with connections to Baxter's city government, that Walmart is pursuing a small SuperCenter in Baxter near I-40. I agree that western Putnam County is going to start seeing more growth than it has ever seen before. I would love to see downtown Baxter revert to its glory days of the 1940s-50s when its downtown was bustling.

I've noticed over the past several months that land on the southwest side of the Baxter I-40 exit has been getting cleared of trees and having some ground leveling done, I wonder if there's a connection there.
