Lead by example. Give someone a chance. A new business is living by those words, believing everyone has something to contribute.

This is the first week open for Cookeville's 'The Exceptional Bean'. Their motto is 'Be Kind. Drink Coffee.'

Here's a nice report from Nashville's Newschannel 5 on the Exceptional Bean in downtown Cookeville:

Where there used to be fire damage, there's now a fairly upscale plant store downtown. Glass Tangerine has opened in the old Sports One which was destroyed by fire last year, on Broad across from Crawdaddy's in the historic WestSide. They advertise as a "plant shop and mercantile" and have a very nice selection of plants, flowers, pottery, and home décor.

Finally. I have no idea how long these buildings have been abandoned, but it looks like someone is finally going to tear them down and replace them with 10 luxury townhouses. This is on 2nd Street bordered by Hickory and Montgomery behind the new medical arts building that was just opened downtown. A block from the emerging restaurant/nightlife district where the new pizza place and rooftop bar are being built on 1st and Oak (across from Red Silo Brewery) and two blocks from the hospital. It's also one block away from where the large Tennessee Heart building is located which is about to double in size by constructing an additional building connected by an overhead walkway.

Here's hoping that this will be just the beginning of more downtown residential developments.

Some sad news followed by some good news. The owner of the Backroom Bistro downtown is going to close his restaurant and turn it into an event space with catering. The good news is that Jamie Boyd, who baked most of the pastries and other goodies served at the Backroom Bistro as well as at some other downtown coffee shops, has opened her own place across the street there in the historic WestSide. Jamie first came to Cookeville from out of state as a college student and while at TTU went to Europe for a semester. She came back with a new passion for pastries and has decided to make Cookeville her forever home.

Jamie's Eats and Sweets is located directly across the street from Crawdaddy's and has already had its soft opening. The grand opening will be next week. She has fresh-baked pastries and will also serve many of the same menu items the Backroom Bistro has been serving: breakfasts, salads, sandwiches, smoothies, and homemade soups.

In addition, she's going to serve Argueta's Coffee. Abner Argueta is from an area in western Guatemala where his family has been growing and harvesting coffee beans for over 100 years. In 2015 Abner emigrated to New York, and earlier this year he moved to Cookeville as a better place to raise his family and brought his coffee roasting business with him. He imports all of his coffee beans from his family farm in Guatemala. You may have seen him set up at area farmers markets.

Anyway, Jamie's Eats and Sweets is located at 50 West Broad between Harper's Recording Studio and Mint Salon.

In other downtown news, the pizza place/wine bar on 1st Street across from Red Silo is coming along. From the picture it looks like stairs and an elevator are being added to the outside of the building for access to its rooftop patio. I haven't heard what the place is going to be called nor when it will open.

Another independent bookstore has opened in downtown Cookeville. Calling itself a "community bookstore and gathering space," Plenty on Spring has opened at 35 West Spring Street, next door to PhotoArt Gallery and across the street from Picasso's Gift Shop, Marilee Hall Studios, and Dairy Queen. Parking is available in the Vertical Coffee parking lot. Their goal is to open a second location in a couple of years, this time out in the country and which will include an event space and dog park.

El Milagro, the Mexican market and restaurant that was across the street from Dairy Queen downtown, has moved to a larger space with more parking at 715 West Spring.

The building where El Milagro used to be is going to be torn down, and that entire block--except for Ralph's Doughnuts--is going to be developed with some luxury townhomes. 60 in all. Once the RAO is approved by the planning department, they should start demolition within 6 months. This does not include the former Builders Supply building but it does include the old Builders Supply storage sheds. The development will be called West Side Connection and will be accessed via Cedar right next to Ralph's and also on Oak, but many of the units will front Spring Street.

Each of those "luxury townhomes" is actually three apartments: one on each floor. So there will be 20 of those buildings with 3 apartments in each one, for a total of 60 apartments. I'm a little disappointed that they're apartments and not condos, but it's still a vast improvement over what's there now. It'll be nice to have more housing options downtown. This will be fun to watch get built.

I wonder when we'll know what'll happen to the old Builders Supply next door. Also, the adjacent property between this development and the Depot, where the Hilton hotel/conference center was originally going to go. It's no longer on the market so I wonder if there are plans for it.

Jamie's Eats and Sweets has had its grand opening. It's a welcomed addition to the historic West Side.

A new sweet and savory food shop has joined the burgeoning businesses on Cookeville's West Side.

Kentucky native Jamie Lankford opened Jamie's Eats & Sweets at 50 W. Broad St., just down the street from where she previously managed the Back Room Bistro.

"I sold desserts out of there," Lankford said. "I told him (owner Rodney Laulo) this was my end game. I wanted to support my mission work and others' mission work."

The latest mission work her business supports is the Go Pink breast cancer support program at the Putnam County Family YMCA.

"Anything you buy that's pink will go straight to that," Lankford said.

Lankford's menu includes more than sweets. For breakfast, she has a breakfast burrito, avocado toast, oatmeal bowl and daily quiche. For lunch, she offers an avocado BLT, The Italian, veggie wrap, Chipotle turkey wrap, grilled cheese, soup of the day, chicken breast salad, Greek salad, seasonal salad, Caesar Salad as well as smoothie bowls. Drinks include blended coffee drinks and protein smoothies as well as traditional espresso, coffee, milk, orange juice and specialty tea.

Soul Craft Coffee in the historic Westside area downtown is really, really good. Not only their coffee, but I'm a big fan of their homemade pop tarts. Soul Craft is expanding to across the street in the last space that used to be part of Sports One which moved a couple of blocks west next to Fil-Thai. Soul Craft will still have its current coffee shop at 43 West Broad, but its restaurant will be across the street at 42 West Broad. I don't know when they're opening, but they built the kitchen this week in the new space. That'll make 6 restaurants/eateries right there in that block just a few feet from each other: Crawdaddy's, Seven Senses, The Blue Pig, Soul Craft Coffee, Jamie's Eats & Sweets, and this new place.

An interesting turn of events: the four or so acres just south of the Depot where a hotel/conference center was going to be built before the pandemic has been sold to HCA Health Services of Tennessee. Anyone know what they have planned? That's way too small for another hospital which the state wouldn't approve anyway. I was thinking it could maybe be a large assisted care facility, but I can't see that HCA has any of those types of facilities. Either way, I guess this means the hotel/conference center plan is officially dead.
