Does anyone know what the teaching situation in Putnam County is? We are condsidering a move to the area in the next year or so. I currently teach in Northern Virginia and am highly qualified under NCLB up here. I am certified to teach PreK-6 in Virginia and 1-8 in Maryland. I have a BS in Elementary Ed and 12 graduate credits in reading instruction. I have also worked in a school system with a high ESL population. Any advice would help.

The Putnam County school system isn't huge, just under 11,000 students, but it's growing at a healthy rate. There's a school of education at the university there which graduates new teachers every year who are all looking for jobs (although most leave the area). However, with your credentials I wouldn't think you'd have much of a problem getting a teaching job particularly since you can also do ESL. I noticed on their web site they had 4 openings for full-time ESL teachers, but that was posted last summer and hasn't been updated since. Still, that shows that the need is there. I read somewhere once that the elementary school in Monterey is 1/3 Hispanic.

Here's the Putnam County Schools web site:

Putnam County's school system is excellent, easily one of the best school systems in the state, certainly one of the best county systems in the state (most of the top-rated school systems tend to be smaller, city school systems).

Cookeville's ZIP codes spread into three other counties, too, which you might want to also look into for teaching jobs: Jackson County, Overton County, and White County.

Good luck!
