How animal friendly is this area? Also is it mainly "house pet" friendly or large animal friendly as well such as horses?

Thanks

In the city limits I don't believe you can have large animals unless it's a farm that was annexed into the city and so was "grandfathered" in. In other words, I don't think you can buy a few acres in town and then open up a horse farm, although if someone already had a horse farm and was annexed into the city they can keep their horse farm.

In the rest of Putnam County, however, there is no zoning whatsoever so you can pretty much do anything you want with your property.

There's a fairly active humane society in Cookeville which just yesterday hosted a very popular Bark in the Park at Algood Park.

I would say that Cookeville is pretty neutral. We don't have a 'dog park' but dogs are welcome in all parks (on leashes, of course). We just had the annual Bark in the Park this weekend

As far as horses, as long as you are not in the city limits, the restrictions for large animals are pretty minimal. Within the city, you have to be within the proper zoning. Saying all that, I have owned a horse and have ridden for several years and while there are not many large boarding stables, there are many locals who board and have facilities available. There are several riding trails within a 20-30 mi radius, absolutely gorgeous treks that are fun and safe. Within an hour or two, there are state parks you can ride in (Big South Fork) and privately owned property you can camp in and ride (East Fork Stables, for one).

Just outside the city of Cookeville there are many hobby farms to be had, along with local riding clubs and show circuit. There are lots of horse people here, both Tennessee Walkers and stock breeds.

HTH!!

That's great! Thanks for the input, we don't own any horses. I was just curious about the area. I am a magnet to stray/abandoned animals... basically any small "house type" animal and I didn't know how acceptable this is in that particular area.

I currently have 4 dogs of varying size, 2 grown cats, 2 young cats and 4 kittens with one hamster that eats like he is a gerbil All rescue animals that I search for permanent homes other than mine. Unfortunately some of the time they become lifer's with us and we want a place that is definately animal friendly, where we can continue our work to re-home these great family additions. The animal services and spca have enough to do, so I guess our calling is to help out.

We have not been to this area yet so just trying to figure out if we should consider it.
Thanks for the info
