Corpusrat, I sure hate to hear that. I spent time in Corpus as a kid and loved it. Still have family down that way.

I have never lived in Corpus, but I have spent lots of time there. I never found it to be as bad as the poster above. The city does look a bit run down in spots, and a bit weathered, but I took that as its coastal charm. I did spend most of my time on the island camping and never felt unsafe, even with the many bums living there. the two malls yeah one of them seems alive and thriving while the one across the street looks dead, never understood why. Streets in the city seem a bit worse for wear, but there was many street improvments going on the last time I was there, and that international highway was going up.

I am not a bar type person but when I went to the blue ghost late one night to see it, I stopped at a bar there and asked about it and some rough looking biker types were very helpful, and did not threaten me in any way. So maybe it is just that poster.. I dont know. Then Again I am a rather large person myself and trained both as a former soldier and cop.. maybe I carry myself differently?

I would consider living in Corpus.. While at the What-A-burger there near the shore, I met a nice couple that had a house for rent and offered it to me and my family for a great price, not far from the coast. And when eating at the local pancake house there near the econo lodge, I got to meet and talk to many locals all older people 55+ and they loved it there, said they would live no other place.

Crime is a factor no matter where you live. I plan to head back down that way soon and check it out again and see if it has gotten worse or better since the last time I was there.

I also like Galveston and thought about moving there, but I hear the same crime stories there as I hear here.. is there no TX costal area that is safe?

From a Mainer to another Mainer (but I currently live in Corpus for the 2nd time-not by choice) there are many other places in the U.S. that you would be happier living. Seriously.

P.S. To those who think "crime is a factor no matter where you live", this is true, but also relative. Check out Maine's crime stats compared to Corpus- ANY town in Maine- how about Maine's largest city, Portland. Have a good day!

Default Working in Corpus/moving to Portland TX

I read the comments about Corpus and some are good and some not. I lived in nearby Portland in 91-95 and am going back there next month because my husband got a job in Corpus. We are an older couple in mid 40's and would like to meet people from the area. I'm kind of new to the posting thread thing, so bare with me. I replied to the Corpus link because on Portland most were talking about Oregan Not Texas. Will look forward to hearing about stuff going on in this area.

I am looking at around $400-$600 for a 1 BR apartment or studio even.

My current job in Maine is a security officer which I have over 5 years experience in. So does Corpus Christi sound like it would be right for me?

Obviously I wouldn't move into an area before I came down and visited for myself but I figured locals could give me a general idea of what I am looking at. I was looking at either Texas, Florida, or the Carolina's and so far it looks like Texas has the best people and is more friendly than Florida which is something that weighs heavily on where to relocate to.
well you didn't say how old you are or if single or married. i thnk that htose factors would have a lot to do with it.

Question Crime in C.C.

Which areas of Corpus Christi have the least amount of crime? City data has it as a high crime city, but a lot of people on this thread say differently. The last time I was there was 10 years ago, and it didn't seem that bad to me. Maybe I wasn't there long enough, but I thought it was nice.

Default changeofpace

98% of corpus has low crime. Statistics do not tell you which area, they simply lump all the crime into the city limits or county. The high crime is centralized for the most part just on the north side of downtown Corpus. Very little crime in Calallen, the entire southside and the older neighborhoods just south of downtown.
Surveys and statistics are always suspect because little thought is given to specifics and clarification.
