Has anyone been down to Port A in the past couple of weeks? I am thinking on taking a road trip this weekend and I am wondering how the beaches look? How is the seaweed and jellyfish situation?

Went to Rockport and Port Aransas at the end of March. Not much seaweed, but I saw quite a few Portuguese Man of War washed up on the beach. But overall, the beaches were pretty clean.

Seea weed is horrible but in Port A and Mustand Island, the tractor plows do push the seaweed over to the dunes. I was a visitor to Rockport and Port Aransas last year. I have a fat tire bicycle that I pedaled down the beach road on the sand heading south from Port Aransas for 6 or 7 miles. I was stunned at the huge amount of Sargasso seaweed that piles up on the beach at Port A and along Mustang Island. The stench was overpowering on a warm day if the wind died down. Some locals explained that it all has to do with wind and water currents that push the dead mounds of Sargasso seaweed from the Carribbean into the Gulf and a lot of it ends up on the southern TX coastine. I never saw anything like this on the Florida or Alabama coastline of the Gulf.

My Earth Science teacher taught us to look at the Gulf of Mexico like an upside-down fishbowl. All the sediment heads to the bottom.

We went down there two weeks ago and never in my life have I seen so much seaweed on the beach. Between Horace Caldwell Pier and the Jetty I counted at least 25 huge mounds of seaweed and at least 12 feet of seaweed to walk on from the sand to the surf. It smelled horrible too. I was very disappointed.
I called the I.B. Magee park office earlier this week and the lady said the seaweed was worse. I didn't think it could get worse. I'm re-thinking about going back this weekend.

Good to know, thanks. I was down there a few weeks ago and the seaweed was bad then. Was planning to return in a week or two, but will probably hold off for now.

I read recently on KRIS or Caller Times that the seaweed is the worst it has been in a very long time. That is a shame. The beaches are pretty nice when there is no seaweed.
