A judge in Corpus Christi, Texas had some harsh words for a mother charged with spanking her own child before sentencing her to probation.
"You don't spank children today," said Judge Jose Longoria. "In the old days, maybe we got spanked, but there was a different quarrel. You don't spank children."

I'd not be real shocked if this happened, say, in California. But Texas? Oh my.

That's ridiculous. And what a dumb comment "In the old days, maybe we got spanked, but there was a different quarrel...."

What different quarrel? That doesn't make sense.

While I don't believe in spankings other, for example, than the quick swat on the rear end of a very young child about to do something potentially dangerous such as running out into the street, that judge was ridiculous. There is a hugh difference between a spanking and a beating.

I agree. That's about how I spank IF I have to. My daughter is 8 now and spanking doesn't usually do any good anymore. Grounding or taking away something is usually the magic charm for her That judge went WAAAYYY overboard over a spanking that looks like a relatively minor thing, not a beating/abused child.

I got spanked enough when I was growing up. Looking back, I'm glad Dad did it and helped me become the person I am now, but that doesn't mean I'll do the same when my child grows up.

As much as the spanking disciplined me, it did also change my personality a little bit from being the playful, extrovert to a more calm, introvert who would think twice about playing with friends/kids of my same age at a party, for example.

If the kid was spanked too bad, then I agree with the judge. Otherwise, too much control.

The child in question is 2 years old, red marks were seen after some time had passed after the spanking. It is one thing to pop a 2 year old on the diaper, another to leave red marks.....

Agree with that for sure. A small pop on a well-padded diaper by a *loving* parent very much in control of their emotions is much different than popping a baby because the parents can't handle their own emotions. Unfortunately, there are extremes on both ends of the spectrum.

I agree. The authorities don't trust the people to know the difference between a spanking and a beating. I usually deserved it when I was spanked. The public schools have gone downhill partly because they can't give "licks" any more. I know for sure than my rowdy friends and I were only kept in check by the threat (I only experienced a couple of licks once, in front of my PE class, and it was more embarrassing than painful).
