McAllen is, IMHO, the better choice. Better economy, better attitude towards "winter Texans", better shopping, etc., even though McAllen is probably 85+% Spanish/Mexican, I think that they are more accepting of the Anglo visitor.

I lived and worked for years in the "Rio grande Valley", I always felt safe and easy with the locals in McAllen.

As a note of caution; we, (my wife and I), no longer visit the border towns for shopping and entertainment, (used to be a fun trip), now we worry about street violence and drug related things that are dangerous to gringos. We haven't been down to "Old Mexico" for the past 6 or 7 years.

If you go, please use good judgement when traveling along the border. Check with the Border Patrol website for the latest news about the border towns. Few border towns are completely safe now-a-days.

Harlingen is a great place to retire. We're white Texan's that came south because of the low cost of living and retirement communities. We only know a few Spanish words and have no problems. Everyone we've met has been very nice.

If retirement is what you are looking for in the Rio Grande Valley, then I do recomment Harlingen over McAllen. McAllen does have more nightlife as in clubs and such but if youre looking to retire im assuming a bustling nightlife isnt that high on your priority list... Harlingen is a bit smaller and quieter... and as has already been mentioned, it is much closer to South Padre Island.
