Odom's Dining Room (house, neighborhood, garden)

Does anyone remember Odom's Dining room on S Staples? It was owned by my great aunt Eula Odom and it was a boarding house. I can tell you some stories about visiting that place as a kid. First time I ever saw an ice machine. The food was served family style and was some of the best I have ever eaten. Her cook was a wonderful lady called Ruth. She cooked southern style.

Yes, at that time, 1959, a white two-story, pier and beam wooden house on the right side of S. Staples, going towards Leopard St., It had a nice porch and well maintained front yard. I knew a man that stayed there but never went inside or ate there.

It was so much fun to play on that porch as a kid. The back had a beautiful garden and two huge fig trees if I remember right. My sister loved to go and pick figs and eat them during the summer. Those were some happy memories in the boarding house. I believe someone told me on another forum that it is now a bar. So sad.

Ate there often, in the late '60's. Bumped elbows with radio/tv folks from the neighborhood stations. Great food. Ma Odom was always keeping an eye on the staff.
