We are a younger couple with no children yet. We're from the Fort Worth area and have been looking at housing communities in Hudson Oaks. But we've always wanted to be near Port Aransas. How is it living down here? How's the taxes? We are planning to have children, is it kid friendly? I've read threads on here about it from like 2008-2010 but wanted updated info, I've also seen that crime has reduced greatly in recent years in RP. We plan to visit the area and look at the various housing communities that are building up. I have seen that the school district on good schools is rated between a 3-6 in Rockport but that isn't a deal breaker for us. Thanks for any help, knowledge and opinions!

Rockport has pretty good schools. I was on the school board 2008-11. Port Aransas, Gregory Portland and Flour Bluff are the better ones in the area along with Rockport. Rockport is conservative safe and friendly. The area where i live is about 25 min from CC. Houses are more expensive than many parts of Corpus.

I'm thinking about relocating to the Rockport area myself. My wife is a medical lab tech so I think here job prospects may be pretty good. I myself am a 56 year old retiree from the oilfield looking to do something part time to supplement our income. Would I have any prospects for work in the area?

Rockport mainly caters to the tourist crowds/retirees, so if you have a special talent or hobby you can peddle, you might do alright there. If your wife wants more options, you might consider closer to Corpus Christi for that. A lot more in the way of medical opportunities there. Portland is a good "in-between" spot to live, as its only a little over 30 miles to Rockport, yet 7 miles to downtown Corpus Christi, across the gorgeous bay.

Thanks for the reply. I looked at Portland, that could be a good option for us. Haven't decided what type of real estate we want to purchase just yet. The condos in Rockport looked nice as well as single family houses. Didn't know if any part time work was available with the local fishing, etc.

Portland has no sense of community0-its just a bedroom spot for Corpus. I'm on 25 min from CC so its not a bad commutte.

Yes Ive4 been to Port O Connor -it seems nice enough. Not far from Victoria which has lots of amenities. I do like Corpus better than Victoria,

Ocean... how do you figure we have no sense of community?? Portland is rapidly growing, and thankfully Portland doesn't have a lot of the issues that plague Corpus Christi, and in this case, including the lousy commute.

Rockport: artsy, Port A: bohemian laid back, Portland: as another poster suggested, it has no real identity. Not at all a bad place though (Country singer Don Williams is from Portland BTW). Ingleside and Aransas Pass are down market and kind of scruffy. If you want the Port A lifestyle, be prepared to pay a lot to live like a poor beachcomber. If I was moving back to the Coastal Bend I would probably look around Rockport/Fulton (lived in Portland before). You will like the people in South Texas. Good luck.
