At one time CC was considered a "terminal point" in railroad terms. I recall my father explaining exactly what that meant in the late 50's.

What people often don't realize is the "Intracoastal Waterway (ICW)" just east of CC is a highly trafficked route for barges, Coast Guard cutters, and all sorts of small boats.

Attached is a photograph of the ICW from the International Space Station:

Port Aransas and the Intracoastal Waterway, Texas : Image of the Day

You will note when looking east towards the Gulf of Mexico on Texas Bus. 35, from Aransas Pass to Rockport you are not looking at the gulf but the barrier islands of Harbor and San Jose Islands. In fact that area is named Red Fish Bay and Estes Flats. Looking across Estes Flats is the low lying San Jose Island, with btw, it's own aircraft landing strip. East of San Jose Island is the gulf.

Rockport does have a nice rural airport with two 5,000' plus paved runways for light jets. There is another private airport just north of Rockport on Goose Island, accessed from Texas 35, Kalt Field.

Sometimes it's not what you're looking at that matters, it's what you see. If you sea an ocean, it's purely notional - pun intended, it's only a sweltering optical illusion caused by atmospheric conditions, like the appearance of a sheet of water in the desert or on a hot road caused by the refraction of light from the sky by that scorching, sweltering Sun.
