I don't have any personal experience with CC area schools, but the info/research is unavoidable when shopping for real estate. Port Aransas and Flour Bluff school districts are well-regarded (relatively speaking). People seem to like Calallen as well. All three of those districts are in outlying areas, not in CC proper. The rest of the districts are incredibly underwhelming, so you have heard correctly.

I'll let the parents out there speak to the other specifics, but some searching through these threads will give you lots of good info about neighborhoods and safety. Within the proper city lines of CC, you won't find a heck of a lot of positivity about either. If you know you want to be in CC proper, look into the Bay Area. If you're open to outlying/suburban areas, check out Calallen, Portland, and south Flour Bluff, for a start.

Others with more long-term experience in the area will be better help, I'm sure, but your apprehensions about the schools are justified.

If you're looking at CCISD, as a general rule, schools on the "Southside" will be pretty good because those neighborhoods are newer and more affluent and the schools are newer. There is gang activity in CC, but most of it is on the north and west sides of town. If a neighborhood looks crappy and run down, don't live there. Individual schools are rated by the Texas Education Agency based on test scores and other criteria. Poke around on the TEA website for info on different schools.

We have a teenage daughter and have had absolutely no issues with gangs. Nor have any other families I know. If you're not a gangbanger and don't live the gang culture, your children should not have any problems.
