Yardarm is a must go. It defies categories.
Bella Luna is immensely better than Frank's
Tannins for Italian
Bellino for Italian
Black Sheep Bistro

Best wings? Blackbeard's on North Beach
Best Mediterranean? Sufi Kabob
Best Burgers are googly's
Best BBQ is there is no answer. Salty Oak is great. Julians is also excellent.
Best Asian is Dao. You cannot beat it.
There is no good steak here. It's a sad fact
Best German is JBs
Best French is a no
High end/romantic is also tough. Republic of Texas and Katz are good, but not great. Yardarm isn't "high end". For high end, you've got to drive to SAT/HOU

Forgot about Yardarm since you are correct it defies classification and it is a good date place. Hadn't tried Dao before I wrote mine and I'd agree with you. It definitely has the most aggressive actual Asian menu. You can get the real stuff off the menu. Hua Tai is better at the American/Chinese stuff without pushing into Chinese Buffet type stuff.

I'd agree Salty Oak and Julian's are also good on bbq. It's a testament to our blue collar nature we have half a dozen good to great bbq places.

My mother and nephew were big fans of Hua Tai until they found a cockroach in their serving recently. Yuk.
