Is Texas A&M Corpus CHristi going to get a football team anytime soon?

I found this on the athletic website.

The land will serve multiple uses including housing, parking, a physical plant and a convention center. It will serve as the new home for the Islander baseball. softball, track and tennis programs as the land is developed.[/SIZE]

For the last few years I have been hoping CC A&M will be adding a football team to the athletic program. It has been brought up. But it has been a couple of years. May 2006 was the last article I could find on it. So I dont know if the idea has died out since then. More than likely it has. But who knows, maybe it hasnt. Here is the article on it if you are interested:

A&M-CC taps firm for opinion on football : Corpus Christi Islanders | Caller-Times | (http://www.caller.com/ccct/islanders/article/0,1641,CCCT_820_4675819,00.html - broken link)

Here is another from July 2005:

We haven't even gotten football at UTSA yet (almost 30,000 students!), though is should start in 2010. It all depends on efforts by the school officials and how willing the students are to fund it (we are doubling our athletics fees).

Isn't the undergrad student population of AM CC like around 10,000?

They have a long way to go before they can achieve a football team.

Really? Texas A&M University-Commerce has right at 9,000 students, and they have a football program.

TAMU-C plays in the Lone Star Conference, which is Division II.

Even though it's not a large school, TAMU-C has produced more Super Bowl MVPs than UT, TAMU and Texas Tech combined!

Division 2 should be their level to start, but I can't see them any higher.

For comparison, the undergrad population at SMU is 6,000 (Division I). TCU is around 7,000. I think Rice has around 2,500 or so.

They are already in a Division I conference, the Southland Conference. If they do decide to start football, it would be at the FCS level. They would play against such teams as Texas State, SFA, Sam Houston, and Lamar.
