I won't cruise but not because of the accident a few days ago. It just doesn't appeal to me to be on a ship with over 3000 other people. My preference is to see lovely museums and the natural beauty of other places. If I want the ocean or a beach there is that without a cruise too. When I see the deck chairs of cruise liners it reminds me of being in a sardine can. I also like a bit of space in my room. Just not my taste although I can understand why it may appeal to some.
Some one above mentioned that only 3 people died on the Costa ship. I am still hearing on our National news there are 40 missing.
There are plenty of cruise lines that aren't mega-ship oriented. We've been on a few cruises, and never in a cabin under 600 s/f--that's larger than most hotel rooms.
Sea voyage by huge cruise liner with 4,000 other people on it is not my kind of vacation and relaxation. However I did travel by cargo ships several times, different routes and every time it was absolutely wonderful experience. I loved it and would do it again.
So, for me - no cruise liner, regardless of the accident.
Well, luxury cruise ships do offer amenities and experiences a cargo ship could not offer. Things like onboard luxury spas, elegant restaurants offering different varieties of cuisines, elaborate floor shows and stylish night life entertainment, duty-free shopping, celebrity headliner shows, gambling casinos, movie theaters, skaking rinks, indoor and out-door pools ... that sort of thing.
As you can see these new style ships are top heavy and quickly become unstable. Thousands would have died if the ship had not been run aground on the shore. So know right away how to get off of the ship, you may only have a few minutes.
What's becoming an increasing concern for me, whether being dependent on a cruise ship captain, or bus driver or an operator of a train, is cell phone usage.
How many incidents has there been already, bus/train crashes involving cellphone distractions?
Now this may not have been the case with this cruise ship incident, but I wouldn't be surprised at all if it may have played a part in it.
Despite today's tragic events, we are still going this fall.
How does everyone think emergency briefings of passengers will be handled from now on?? Last few I went to were very casual, big group setting in the theater.
Years ago they were way stricter, most of the time held before the ship left port the first day, you had to wear your live vest, get your room # checked off along with the# of people in each room.
From what I read, it was pretty chaotic, understandably so...
I've only been on one cruise (so far!), and it was in March 2010 on NCL. Attendance was mandatory for the on-deck emergency briefing before we left port. They would not start the briefing until every single guest was present and accounted for. We all wore life vests and the instruction re: the vests and the life boats was very thorough.
I watched a lengthy report on ABC's 20/20 this evening about cruise ship disasters. If I'd seen that before going on my first cruise, it might have scared me away. Statistically, though, cruising is about the safest thing you can do. I can't wait to go again!

I would not take a cruise before or after this event. I have no desire to spend days on a ship full of thousands of people. No thanks.
