No surprise there. We keep building all these new private prisons, with contracts that guarantee they will be filled up. Got to make money by locking American citizens.
Well, with 1 in 3 adults in the "working" demographic unemployed, food stamps at record levels and opportunities being removed by government, it's not too surprising to me.
Neither our war on drugs or war on poverty are working. They are both consuming massive amounts of resources while making the situations worse.
Our government needs to get out of the nanny business, but too many voters feel the government should run everything.

Rep point for bringing this to attention. There would be a LOT fewer people in prison if the U.S. mental health system wasn't as bad it is now. In the aggregate, prisons and jails ARE the biggest mental health car systm in the country right now.

I heard it was because Reagan turned them loose; someone else said the ACLU sued to make that happen.
Whatever the reason, it's criminal to have so many mentally ill, some of them veterans, fending for themselves on the streets.
