Analysis: Brazil Scrambles to Get Ready as World Cup Looms

Workers are still scrambling to finish five of the 12 stadiums that will play host to matches. The stadium in Brazil’s biggest city, Sao Paulo — which will stage the opening match on Thursday — was supposed to have been finished last December. It’s still being readied, and the planned roof won’t be finished on time. Temporary seats for 20,000 fans have now received safety clearance from firefighters; they have never been tested during a full game.

Oh my gawd, there is no way that I would trust those stadiums to be safe!

Why do they pick these 3rd world countries and then wonder why they don't have the infrastructure to support holding the Olympics, the World Cup, etc?

Would you really consider Brazil the 3rd World....more like 2.25 or 2.5 world.

They should have been able to handle this...don't need much for soccer but a stadium, a few guys in funny shorts, and some drunk rowdy fans.

I thik the big issue was that Brazil decided to go too far with this project...and obviously the corruption. They didn't need 12 stadiums, but they built them. They should have built 10 and saved a ton of money and focused their resources.

I'm told the Itaquerao stadium in Sao Paulo will be fine for the game, but the area surrounding it is still full of cranes and such, which is too bad.

I won't touch the other stupid comments above...

I agree and it is too bad that they overextended their resources/abilities. I wish them the best.

Real men don't take steroids/ become muscle-bound freaks, and wear plastic to protect their bodies[American football] or have fat butts as big as Big Momma's from standing around spitting and scratching[baseball]!

Soccer players are real 'eye-candy' men,oo-la-la!

They just had that horrible nightclub fire where a ton of kids died because it wasn't properly built and up to fire codes. Its sad that a country and city for that matter that is so poor that half the citizens live in shacks is spending hundreds of millions on building a stadium that will be used a few times.

I dunno, man. 15 of the top 50 most dangerous cities are located inside Brazil's borders, and a large percentage of Brazilians live in abject poverty.

That kinda sums up "Third World" for me.

^^ this. They can barely feed their own people much less throw out so much money on this kind of a boondoggle. Like the Olympics, there is a lot of pride in hosting but very little - if any - economic gain.
