Er, that would be a very, very dumb act of rebellion. I'm sure she could do just as much hurt to her parents if she just declared herself a liberal atheist. Or said she was lesbian.
Honestly, if her parents are doctors, I would like them not to be recertified next time they take the test. Do no harm right? If my doctor decided telling me about smoking and drugs would encourage me to do it, so he didn't tell me, his ass would be grass.
Yes, BOTH parents are doctors.
I do agree that would be the worst form of rebellion. But, in fact, it does turn out to be exactly that. Intentional or not. In short, it makes her father look like an idiot.
Or just do what the Bible says and teach one's children in the ways of God and they will not depart from them (Bible paraphrase). The answer is not religion, it is God.
This young girl now will suffer as we all do from the sin (missing the mark) in our lives. If we just did what God said, life would go much better.
Abortions are performed on women who's lives are in danger, too. Honestly so much fuss over a medical procedure. BTW, do you agree with medicare and medicaid providing Viagra to sex crazed men?-
I saw an episode of ER where a woman got an abortion, and it seemed to be for the better... she already had 5 children, ranging from few months all the way to 6 years old. So she pretty much had a baby almost every year. She got hysterical when she was told she feinted because she was pregnant, again. She was distraught at having to care for 4 kids (the baby was at home with a babysitter) that she went into a sort of emotional panic and breakdown. The father rushed to the hospital just too late to stop her from getting an abortion, but in the end, both agreed it was for the better.

Its sad really....its kind of the same line of thinking as those who are "dollar smart, penny foolish"...sometimes the most seemingly obvious answer isnt the right one. This is one of those problems where its better to address it head-on than pretend it doesn't exist.
Studies have proven over and over again that abstinence-only education doesn't work. Its always better to empower our teens with knowledge and resources so they can control their reproductive choices.
Just another example of cognitive dissonance from the religious right.
Abstinence only education doesn't work any better than any other form of sex education, for preventing pregnancy. But neither is it to blame for our out of wedlock birth rates.
However, abstinence in practice will prevent pregnancy with 100 percent effectiveness. It's guaranteed to work.
You were lucky, for even highly effective birth control can fail. You were smart to use it and lucky it worked.
I also had an agreement with any partner I ever had and that is no children. It was always discussed like adults should. It was more about using common sense than being "lucky."
I know she is 17 but that's close enough for one to know and figure out that having sex can result in a baby. It is too bad about the lack of communication from her parents but I did not get that either. I was also raised in a religious household, FWIW.
I used to be an HIV/AIDS educator in a past life. I went into public high schools with a very sanitized education program. While I was quite restricted in what I could and couldn't talk about, there was no restriction on the questions and comments that I got from the students. I quickly learned that much of the knowledge that these teenagers have learned from one another is horribly, horribly flawed.
The one tidbit that will always stick out in my memory is the junior who told me that she would never get AIDS or any other diseases because she only performed oral, and she sometimes gargled with bleach.
We CANNOT trust kids to "figure it out" on their own!
Nice to see an educator come out and say what a pathetic job our education system does. I mean, you're never going to be able to teach all people to think, but education system is so bad it doesn't even encourage it. Not really your fault at all. By high school, it's really too late and you're still hamstrung as a teacher in what you're able to do.
Why do people keep trying to suppress what is natural? Sex is completely natural. There is nothing immoral nor wrong about sex. Therefore, hows about what we DO do is teach people how to be careful about sex instead of trying to teach them to not have it. Simple.

Perhaps there's nothing immoral nor wrong about sex, but it does require a degree of emotional maturity that the vast majority of teenagers don't possess.
