I'm not talking about morality.
I'm not understanding how the bank's mistake causes the perp to use the money.

In fact, if the dude did absolutely nothing, the bank would have corrected the mistake and nothing bad would happen to him.

No they probably wouldn't. May be in this case as the money was more may be they would have done something but I had to go to branch of BoA so that they can have their $15 which they put in my account by mistake.

ok, if he did nothing, he wouldn't be convicted of theft.

So how does the bank's mistake causes him to do something illegal? As if he had no other option.

You didn't have $15 in your account to cover it?

Of course kid shouldn't have done anything with the money as it was not his.
If you admit he should not have done anything with the money how can you say he should not be held responsible??

10 yrs probation is a bit harsh. The bank employee should not of made the mistake in the first place.

The bank's mistake did not make the kid do anything. I don't understand this mentality

The bank employee lost their job. They have been punished.

He spent $30,000 that wasn't his. How difficult is this to understand??

This. I don't know how this topic has lasted this long! Plus we now know that this adult(yes, ADULT!) was malicious in trying to keep money he knew wasn't his by concocting some fake inheritance money story. I don't feel sorry for him at all nor do I think his sentence was too harsh. Unbelievable, the people that are bending over backwards to defend this adult.

I completely agree. I don't think it was theft at all. The bank made a mistake. The kid had the right to spend the money. So instead of the bank saying, "We screwed up," and fixing their own error, they prosecuted the kid for spending money the bank deposited into his account. They are a bank. It is their responsibility to avoid making $30,000 mistakes. I wonder how many people judging this kid would pick up a $20 bill someone dropped on the ground and spend it. Whether it's $20 or $20K makes no difference whatsoever morally.
