Child Sent to Hospital After Being Tased By School Cop for Misbehaving, Charged with a Felony | The Free Thought Project
Powhatan County, Virginia – The school resource officers have struck again. Last Friday, a police officer working at Powhatan Junior High School used a taser on an 8th-grade student.

According to the officers side of the story, the child tried to attack him and run away. However, there has been no proof put forward to back up this claim. Also, even according to the officer’s side of the story, the child was fleeing at the time when he used the taser.

The officer says that he was attacked when he attempted to arrest the child for being disruptive in class.
When police taze 6 feet tall thugs i can understand, when they really need to do that - i can understand them too...
But when they use such forces for KIDS... I still don't wanna believe in police brutality, but it seems like now, many cops are really mad! What do you think guys?

Assuming that the kid was running away when tazed, it sounds an error of judgment by the officer unless there's evidence that the kid was armed and/or threatening violence elsewhere.

But as for the fact that he was only an 8th grader -- I've met 8th graders that were well capable of doing some physical damage. The article doesn't describe any discrepancy in the size of the parties. And, the website reporting the incident is clearly trying to make its own political points. I wouldn't expect impartial reporting from this source.

I can see this going either way.

It could be an overzealous cop that should lose his job and possibly be charged for assaulting a child.

It could also be that the cop was put in a no win situation.

My guess is that if more "bad kids" were sent to alternative schools, we'd have less problems in our schools.

Was this a "bad kid"? I have no idea, but I know that too many school districts keep "bad kids" in regular schools screwing up the learning environment for everyone else.

Clearly an incompetent teacher that is unable to control his/her class.

Freedom of expression is an important part of growing up.

This is why I say homeschool and stop giving your kids to the government to brainwash and raise.

You obviously have no idea how bad these kids can get. I was in high school not so long ago and I remember middle school and some of those kids were straight TRASH. Had no respect for the teacher, no respect for their peers, no respect for the facilities provided to them for free. They had no business being in school and were ready to physically assault our teachers. I saw this on a daily. I am all for middle and high school students being arrested because 1) they deserve it 2) their ignorant parents think it's the school's responsibilities to discipline their kids 3) they get angry when those kids are disciplined with ISS or suspension and come to the school and raise hell 4) this will teach ALL parties a lesson that their ridiculous behaviors will not be tolerated in an institution that is provided free of charge to them.

Without knowing more of the situation, it is hard to judge if this was an over reaction, if the incident could or should have been handled differently, or if the officer made the right call.

I will say that at 8th grade level, some kids can be quite large, especially if they've been held back. My son and some of his friends at 12 or 13 or 14 years old were over 6' tall, and a couple of them were pretty sturdily built. One of his class mates is the son of an ex-NFL defensive lineman, and at 13, the kid was over 200lbs and strong and fast.

I also had a teacher back in the day when I was in high school, she had started out in Philly in a alternative education high school where some of the kids were discipline problems, all were academically challenged. She was physically attacked by a student who was quite a bit larger than her, and the only thing that she could do to protect herself was grab a pair of scissors and stab him in the buttocks when he picked her up and threw her over his shoulder (this was before the days of cell phones, and she had no way to call or summon help). There were parents who were outraged, but what should she have done, let him beat her up/rape her/ kill her?

I am not saying that the officer was right, the incident should definitely be fully investigated, but just postulating that there could be situations where tazing an out of control violent child might be the correct, or least bad, thing. What would have happened if this hadn't happened, and the student went on a violent rampage? Then people would be saying that the officer was there to protect their children and that he should have done something.

No way to judge this without more info. I assure you we have some "eighth graders" that would just as soon punch you as look at you, and they are plenty big enough to do so. And if the kid is a couple of years behind, then they absolutely are able to cause physical harm. Happens all the time.
