I even stay away from any self medication using OTCs.. I keep my eyes on my wife... and not others.. Ive seen too many coppers end up living in motor homes in station parking lots..miserable divorced broke and drinking.. and their careers spiral into the toilet quickly... which is why we have such a strong referral program on my department.. carrot and stick approach... holistically go get help.. or you will be ordered to do so. The temptations are strong but if you arent predisposed to them they melt away..

You lived an entire career along with your husband.... for behind every policeman is usually a great family to support them.. its a total team effort.. police haters cant understand this at all... the "blue fraternity" extends out to every person who works in any public safety position to some extent... if you have to deal with the public.. you get it... if you have to deal with someone who deals with the public you get it.. and if you do it successfully...not only do you get it.. but you worked hard at getting it right...

The haters out themselves... Id rather have them be asshats here then deal with them as whackjobs on the street where options for dialogue arent going to go as well for them.. and if they're truly crazy Id rather not ever meet them

You are part of the positive everyday stories about police

Thank you

Aww thanks. You're very kind and grounded. You have a good head on your shoulders and it sounds like you're coping well. I just lost a cop friend that has isolated himself and is well on his way to into alcoholism. It's very sad and I just can't reach him. He's so shut down emotionally. I see him when I walk my dogs and ride my bike but he won't stop and talk to me anymore. I feel so sorry for him. John's department lost one to suicide almost two years ago now and I know what you mean about miserable, divorced and broke. John's sergeant died shortly after he retired from alcohol and smoking abuse. I stumbled upon him by accident in one of the hospitals I was working in. He had cancer and never got to enjoy his retirement. He was divorced from his wife and living with his girlfriend and two young kids and unhappy when he died. I talk or text with our neighbor nearly daily. He's a retired police officer from our town and an alcoholic that doesn't drink anymore. He's not well physically and some what difficult to deal with on a personal level. He helped me a lot to understand what John was coping with. As you said he kept a lot of things to himself and my knight in shining armor disappeared for awhile. His evil twin took his place for quite some time but he eventually found his way back to me. It's sad that the haters don't understand that police officers are more than just a uniform. They are real people with real problems and can have a bad day just like all of us. If there was more respect and less of the I'm perfect and my loved ones can do no wrong then maybe society could learn to police itself a little more and make everyone's life easier.

Play nice, kids (cop or not).

May all the injured officers recouperate, and all the fallen officers rest in peace.

A "couple" of negative stories? Seems to me that there are at least 2-3 stories a week on the main stream news media where the obvious intention is to point out yet another example of how evil and out of control police officers are. The details of the incidents in these stories are skewed, left out, or embellished in obvious attempts to make the police officer the evil villain out to kill or injure a poor innocent who was only polishing his own halo. And that's not even to mention the hatchet job the DOJ is attempting on municipal police forces who happen to fall into DOJ nets out there casting for "racism".

I'm happy to see those stories about the good things that police officers get involved in as they carry out their duties.

A guy might respond to a call for help but he also might arrest the caller because of unpaid parking tickets. Police worship is a form of Stockholm syndrome.
So arresting or ticketing someone for breaking a law is a "bad thing", I suppose?

It's never the perpetrator's fault, is it?

Here's a clue, stay on the right side of the law, and you won't have any problems with the police.

I've been told they can't just knock on someone's door to question them without having some evidence that a law has been broken- and that evidence is not a story coming from an individual accusing another person of stealing his I-Pad.

It's like onstar for phones. That'd be probable cause no?

But I'm out on this thread, requesting the wishes of the OP.

He thinks I hate cops but my ex was pretty awesome.

The biggest difference between OnStar and iPad tracking is that the owner of the vehicle is registered with the state. There is no similar government registration of iPads. Plus OnStar actually maintains a strict chain of custody on the information they collect. Even with all of that, the normal procedure is for the theft to be reported and then the theft report is used for a warrant to collect the tracking information from OnStar. The tracking information by itself is not enough to get a warrant, but the tracking information combined with observation information (e.g. seeing the car itself at the location) can then constitute probable cause.
If OnStar tracks the car to a house, but the car is in the garage, the officer is out of luck. Will not be enough to get a warrant to search the house, nor be enough probable cause to conduct an on view search. There are actually several court cases over the last 15 years establishing that OnStar tracking information must be combined with other information to constitute probable cause and is not probable cause by itself.
(e.g. United States v. Dantzler, 2010 U.S. Dist. LEXIS 68753 which established that OnStar could be used to track a stolen vehicle on public thoroughfares, but would not have been usable if the vehicle was in storage on private property). It all traces back to US v Knotts, which established the circumstances under which "beeper" electronic tracking could be used (the "reasonable expectation of privacy" case).

Im sure they will post up their vile invective smearing all of us serving in the United States.. which is actually a good thing and shows regular folks what we face every second dealing with sick people on the street. There are roughly five hundred thousand police officers serving in the United States.. maybe another hundred thousand reserve and part timers

Ill update this with contemporary events...most of the information comes from the "officer down" bulletins that are on our briefing board (so we can send money.. donate blood, or do a hundred other things for their families)
The purpose of this thread is to show the overwhelming majority of us love to serve... unselfish service is something that is lacking today in the world

This is just March... I didnt put all the injured officers or all the shootings in the mix..or any from my department...

It is a privilege to serve and to say .... we care,,, and thanks to all of you that "get it".. and to those of you that have personally written to me in some form... it makes every second of heartache worth it.. and to the dispatchers who have written.. you are angels on the other end of the radio....

Again.. thank you

Once the Thin Blue Line is eliminated and cops are held accountable as they should be then maybe we can have this discussion. Usually when there's an example of police misconduct it never takes long for the police to investigate the police so the police can let us know that the police have done nothing wrong.
I also find it amusing that you don't like being lumped in with the bad apples yet that's what cops do to the people they interact with every day. go figure....

The good news is only two bystanders were shot. Oh yeah...good shooting alright! Unfortunately based on the marksmanship skills of the average jack booted thug that IS considered good shooting.
