Sounds like a very controlling, unhealthy relationship. I was in a similar relationship like that where I was subjected to name-calling and verbal abuse. He did not like me wearing makeup or presenting myself in nice flattering clothing. I left after 3 months. I think she stays for various reasons and one may be that she has low-self esteem.
Yes, I would consider this to be plain unhealthy. Picking up 88 pounds in itself is unhealthy, and staying with a controlling jealous man is even more so.
The next headline will be "Man Divorces Wife Because She Gained Weight." If I were that woman, I would run from that man as fast as my overweight little legs would carry me.
EDIT to say she is his girlfriend, not wife. But the same idea applies.

Good? That's not a normal relationship. If he wanted an overweight person to date, why not find someone overweight to begin with? Going from 100 lbs to 188 is not healthy at all.
In addition to what the other posters have said, I think the man here has low self esteem as well if he's afraid he's going to lose his girlfriend to other men the way she was.
I don't remember the case, but a guy murdered his wife after she lost something like 100 pounds because her new look and her changed personality [more outgoing and self-confident] caused him to be jealous and controlling of where she was, her friends, etc.. She refused to plump-up for him, so he killed her.

I was thinking the same thing also. I wonder what the girl will do if he then decides to leave her because of weight issues? And some men do like larger-sized women over skinny ones and to purposely gain weight because a SO wants you too is pathetic

No. More men should not do this! It sounds to me as though this man has issues of insecurity.
