This happens all the time where I live. All the Subway workers here are black, and they load up the subs/pizzas for their "homies" and I've seen double meat double cheese subs with bacon get charged as a $5 footlong. They also get free chips and drink. I get charged for every single last thing. I have just accepted it as part of being in the south. As much as that sucks though, standing behind a person while he hoots and hollers with the dancing staff is probably worse. I've had to wait as long as 15-20 mins until they were done 'visiting'. Who am I gonna complain to? They would just call me racist, and people would find out and probably come after me.
What really makes me sad is when I moved to the South, my hope was that my cultural understanding of the area would be enriched. Instead it has actually made me less tolerable to those I've met, and their poor attitude. There were many times I thought maybe I was overreacting until I met a community of folks that had moved down here for work from other areas and were seeing the same things. Locals don't really see it because they have lived it their whole lives so it doesn't bother them. However people from away all look at me with wide eyes saying this is the biggest mistake they have ever made. I think these last two years have been hell and I am so glad to be moving in July.
so with all the black on white conflicts going on, I wanted to get your opinion on what you would have done in this situation.
i went to a Subway restaurant for lunch and all of the employees are black. the black customer in front of me was flirting with one of sandwich artist. she makes his sandwich and when she cashes him out she tells him since today is Black Shirt day, he gets a free bag of chips. he did. cool i thought. i got a black shirt too! well, she took my order, made my sandwich, but offered no deal on the chips! instead asks if i want to add a chip and drink to make it a combo. hmm, was it not offered to me because i was a non-black? my shirt was blacker than his too. i just paid and left but thought about calling her out or contacting the store owner. what do you think??
What? Now a minimum wager who works at a Subway shop is call a "sandwich artist"? Seriously? Who came up with the name/title? This "everyone gets a gold star" world is getting out of hand!

Well, the workers wanted an increase in wages, but at the end of the day, they had to settle for a more dignified title. They all went home happy.

Well I guess the customer was all that and a bag of chips.
I would of simply said hey black shirt Sunday huh? Hey I'm wearing a black shirt. Which are the free chips? Now if she didn't give me the chips I would of called the owner and innocently asked about that lesser known Black Shirt Sunday free chips giveaway that I did not get my free chips.
