Face it, the US govt, infrastructure and society is failing. Canada is on your own. Those houses in Detroit look better than where I live in AZ. The grass is mowed. If not for the crime and traffic I'd move there. Here they screwed around so long building a bridge to NV a casino owner paid for it. Now they have been fightng oiver another one for twenty years! We are a failed state, it just hasdn't sunk in yet.

Canada should collect all tolls from the bridge also.... I understand Michigan not funding as Detroit was bankrupt, but the feds have no excuse. Those stupid politicians making the country look bad (again).....

Ever been to Michigan? Everything is falling apart. We can't afford to fix our roads. Build a new bridge? Ain't gonna happen. It's the fed gov that has the money printing machine, not the states.

Magnatomicflux.

I want to personally THANK you for giving this thread a human face, and showing the huge traffic and pollution problems that the Ambassador bridge causes, to YOUR city, Windsor, Ontario. Every one of those transport trucks sitting on Huron Church Road is running and spewing fumes. And it goes on twenty four hours a day, all year round.

The photos that you published here, showing the horrible condition of the bridge structure, and the massive back ups on the Canadian side of the border, should be a source of embarrassment to all Americans, but apparently that is not the case.

Perhaps now, it will be clear to all why Canada has found it necessary to go ahead and build the new bridge on our own dime.

Jim B.

This is definitely one of the top 3 worst comebacks I have heard on CD. These three companies are major players in globalization and the international economy. What is the most coveted luxury in China? Apple products! What is the recently introduced airplane that is literally transforming how people move around the planet? Boeing dreamliner 787! Never before would it have been possible to take a direct flight from my hometown (San Diego) to Tokyo, Japan. Innovation that leads the world and connects the world in more ways is a signature of the American economy and soft power.

Look clueless/ self-deprecating American. You clearly have not travelled much outside the states to understand the impact of US companies globally. How did you fly to Turkey? Boeing. What is everyone wearing? Levi jeans What's the local, reliable coffee joint that you recognize? Starbucks. How are people talking to each other? Apple phones. How is the internet being used? Google. What fast food restaurant do you drop in to quickly use the restroom? McDonald's.

As for the 747 being the best Boeing plane- are you kidding? Stop living in the 1980s. Guess what, it wasn't a better time!

The only way we'll be able to live up to the image we wish we still had is to question what we're doing and where we're going ... Which appears to be NOWHERE. We don't even take care if our own infrastructure anymore. We complain about "no jobs", but can't even muster enough steam to rebuild our roads. We hang out with our fingers up our nose while the world uses our universities and amassed knowledge to beat us at alternative energy sources.

We complain about not having money, while billions are wasted on politics (the ONE place where money does not belong).

You call me ignorant while you blind yourself with your head in the sand ignoring how far we've fallen.

Wow!
Not sure where I disagreed with this or even discussed it...? You're ignorant because your comment was false and you chose to not look up simple statistics. Making statements without facts is willingly ignorant. Your comments about Boeing, Google, and Apple are completely clueless.

The entire cost, including 250 million dollars to build the US Customs plaza, on the Michigan side of the bridge, will be paid for by Canada.

Why.....The US Federal Government and the State of Michigan have been stalling the project for more than 10 years. The existing Ambassador Bridge is all most falling into the Detroit river( it is privately owned by a US man ) and it is woefully inadequate in both it`s safety, and it`s narrow lanes.

The Ambassador bridge is the busiest International crossing in the WORLD, far surpassing any place between the USA and Mexico, for both commercial and private car traffic.

Now for my question to Americans..........Given that the Canadian Government is paying for the entire cost of building the bridge, and the US Customs facilities, as well...........

Should the jobs that the bridge creates, such as the toll both attendants, the duty free shop employees, and the bridge maintenance workers..........ALL be Canadian..............I think so. And so should the materials, contractors, suppliers, and labourers, to build the bridge.

Of course the US Customs and Immigration agents will be Americans, but the other jobs should be given to qualified Canadians, yes.....

Ok I have laid out the situation, here are some news articles to read up on.

link PM announces that the Detroit River International Crossing will be named the Gordie Howe International Bridge | Prime Minister of Canada

Canada to pay entire cost of Detroit-Windsor U.S. Customs plaza - The Globe and Mail

Vehicle tolls to finance Detroit-Windsor bridge plaza - The Globe and Mail

As it stands now, the bridge will be paid for by the collection of tolls on both private cars, and commercial trucks, AND all of that money will go to the Canadian Government, none of it to the USA Government, who have continued to refuse to pay for their facility on the Michigan side of the bridge, or to contribute any funds to the bridge construction.

Remember that Canada is the biggest trade customer that the USA has. Bigger than China, Japan, and the UK combined. We sell you more, and we BUY more from you, than any other country. 37 of the 50 US states report that Canada is their number one export destination.

This is how your Government treats it`s biggest customer....... and biggest supplier.......

OK lets hear from you.

Jim B.
Which Michigan is this bridge going to connect to? There ARE in fact TWO Michingans! TWO! THIS is why I am not surprised that Canada is paying for the entire thing. The U.S.A. can't even call it "North Michigan" and "South Michigan". Notbody believes me when I every say that there are TWO Michigans! But they ARE there. I know they are!

We can't afford infrastructure or repairs, but we can afford this:

and this:
How DOD.

Anyway, I don't believe this thread is speaking about American companies, and I am happy that you have been successful enough to travel the world. I am unhappy with American Government, and it's misplaced priorities.

I am unhappy with corporate and government-controlled media, which is keeping us fighting against each other, rather than working toward goals that help us all.

I am unhappy with Citizens United, a ruling that would have been illegal a few decades ago.

I am happy that you think the status quo is fine. Many of us do not.

It does NOT make us unpatriotic ... it makes us have something to fight for, tomake things better, for us all, not just a few at the top ... but that, too, is not part of this bridge discussion.
