What a damn shame! And they blew through the money? (Quite frankly, I'm not buying that . . . time to investigate some overseas accounts). But, this family aside, I am very wary of charities as its not a big secret that many of them devote a very small percentage of their funds to actually helping those in need.

It's typical. Majority of charities are all for profit 1st then charity work is consider their expense. Just about every charity out there has some president making a hefty 6-7 figure salary while the rest of people volunteers working for peanuts and the money is all tax free.

Why do you think rich people all have their own little charities here and there? That's their little personal shopping service. They use it to buy luxury goods and pay no tax.

Eh, whatever...

Remember, "50 Shades of Grey" is a romance novel because the dude's a billionaire. Put the setting in a trailer park, and you have an episode of "Criminal Minds"

Crooks are crooks, the dollar amount is simply score keeping...

So it's funny (haha), light hearted and a joke that these people did not give the money to the charity?

Wow that was a lot of money raised. This is why I give to certain charities, so many are scams and fraud out there.

Interesting article. The chart of top 10 offenders was enlightening as well.

#5 International Union of Police Associations, AFL-CIO raised by solicitors $66.6 million paid to solicitors $50.4 million % spent on direct cash aid .5% Looks like they are just making money for the union.

Just a few days ago I received a call soliciting money for the Police Benevolent Association. What was notable about this call is that the gentleman on the other end made a point of stressing that "this call is being recorded" WTF!?!? Seriously, implying a threat. He was also aggressive when I essentially told him to pound sand.

Bunch of scum. I give to organizations that I know/interact with personally.

Due diligence before giving is always a good idea.

Charity Navigator tells how much goes to overhead and how much to actual programs:

That is part of their schtick. They want people to intimidate people into donating.
