As someone has mentioned above, the more expensive the hotel, the less likely they will offer free Wifi.
Not offering free wifi is a major deal breaker for me as I like to browse / fine tune next day's activities online the night before. That includes map downloads, etc. Husband also likes to watch a short movie in bed before he goes to sleep.
3 star / business oriented hotels will always have free Wifi, they often throw in free breakfast too, which is why I always book this type whenever possible. Holiday Inn, Courtyard, Embassy Suite, Residence Inn, etc. Those are your best bets for free wifi and often free hot breakfast.
Anything that has 'resort' next to their name will gouge you for free internet.
1st world woes are hell. I remember when TV and a pool were luxuries/deal breakers. I base my decision on whether my dog can stay or not. Internet is for when I am home here at my desk. Little wonder we are on a down slope.
Hotels that cater to business travelers almost always have free in-room wifi. The only time I've run into charges for wifi was during a recent visit to a historic resort.
It always amuses me that the divey Knights Inn that I stayed at in Bumble****, WV had excellent free wi-fi (in addition to a really great free breakfast), while the luxury hotel I stay in for an annual conference charges insane prices to access their wi-fi.
When I'm traveling, I won't consider a place that doesn't have free wi-fi.
Most don’t. If you want free wifi try Motel 6. If you really want to splurge Super 8 has them too. The fact is when traveling with family and you want to stay in a nice place you pay for wifi.
We've stayed at numerous Marriotts and their partner hotels numerous times. All have had wifi. Though I will say we aren't luxury hotel people either.

Yep. If you are staying at a full service hotel more often then not you will have to pay for internet in the room.
It's less of a deal for me nowadays since I can use my smartphone as LTE hotspot.
However, it is definitely a plus to have hotel wifi when using high bandwidth applications, such as porn.
