I have grown to appreciate these stories more and more as it points out the hubris of man toward his environment. Nothing like self culling by dimwits to provide cheap entertainment.
Had to read the story to find out he was not from the area. I live in south Louisiana. We know not to swim in water that may have alligators and anyone who chooses to swim in such water even after written and verbal warnings, I have no sympathy for them if they're attacked. My sympathy is for those who know the idiot having to live with his death.
Actually, Tommy was born and raised in the area, but had been living in Missouri for a while and had only recently returned. He has a Facebook page; all the pictures of him there show him either drunk or looking hung over. I'll bet he jumped in after drinking enough beer to lay me out flat.
I certainly don't want to imply I'm mocking him, or scorning Texans, either. Since this is the first death by alligator in Texas since 1937, obviously, Texans give the animals all the caution and respect they deserve. If this had happened in Florida, I doubt very much it would have gotten the notice it did.
I'm also sorry the young man didn't live long enough to get some treatment for his big drinking problem. He was at the age when drunks are most able to turn themselves around. By all accounts, he was a good friend to all, drunk or sober, and left a lot of sorrow in his passing.
Call it what you will- karma, fate, stupidity, bad luck. I think everyone awaits his end or pursues it, and this was, unfortunately, his.
"Alligator kills man who mocked it before jumping in for swim"
Sounds like the alligator needs to grow a thicker skin.
