If this is true what a Sleazeball
Quote:
“Blue Bloods” star Tom Selleck has been stealing water from a fire hydrant — presumably to irrigate his sprawling ranch and avocado farm in drought-parched Southern California, officials said.
Selleck, who plays the NYPD commissioner on the CBS drama, has filled up a commercial water tanker at least a dozen times from a fire hydrant in Thousand Oaks, Calif., since 2013, according to a civil complaint filed by the Calleguas Municipal Water District in Ventura County Superior Court.
Selleck owns a 60-acre ranch and avocado farm in nearby Hidden Valley.
The district claims it has documented seven times when a commercial water truck filled up at a Thousand Oaks hydrant before taking it into “the Hidden Valley area, where the Selleck property is located,” between Sept. 20, 2013, and Oct. 3, 2013.
After a cease-and-desist letter was sent to Selleck and his wife, Jillie Mack, on Nov. 26, 2013, the same truck again siphoned water for the actor on Dec. 16, 2013, according to the suit.
The truck made similar runs on March 23, 24, 25 and 26 of this year, the complaint says.
Reps for the 70-year-old former “Magnum P.I.” actor did not return multiple messages seeking comment Wednesday.
Local government boundaries — and not big money — are at stake in the battle, the water district said.
Selleck’s ranch is outside the Calleguas district and should be relying on the actor’s own groundwater supply, officials said.
“It’s about equity and fairness and protecting the resources for the people who are paying for it,” said Eric Bergh, manager of resources for the district.
The actual cash value of the allegedly stolen water is peanuts. The district could sell 325,000 gallons of water for as little as $1,200, according to Bergh.
But the district wants Selleck to pay $21,685.55 for investigators it hired and court costs.
California residents and businesses are under severe water-usage restrictions amid the drought.

Before someone predictably calls him a hypocritical Hollywood *******, I'd like to note that he is a Republican. Thank you.

Water is FREE. Go into any resturant and ask for a glass. If you home is on fire, they city does not send you a bill for the water used.

Water is free?!?! Hardly! Let me guess, you're a renter? Your landlord probably pays the water bill.

If you live outside a fire district, it's common for rural fire departments to charge a fee if they respond to a fire. In some states like California, that takes the form of more an upfront fee (Fire Prevention Fee). In others it's usually either an add-on to your home owner's insurance or a subscription fee similar to California's but not formalized in statute. That or you just get a surprise bill. If you live in an incorporated city, then usually you pay taxes that cover the fire department.

I wonder if it's possible the person who hooked up the hydrant was doing so without the knowledge of the Selleck family? I know the fire department allows people to use water from their hydrants by connecting a water meter to the hydrant and use fire hoses to fill swimming pools, ponds, and water trucks. The meter is read and the bill for the water sent to the home owner or company. I think it's possible someone took the initiative on their own to do this not knowing or caring it is an illegal act. But the fact that the Selleck family hasn't responded leads the above in doubt.
