I agree that the Coast Guard should do their best to save any life that is in trouble at sea. But if the search is due to pure negligence of the people they are looking for, at some point some type of compensation to the tax payer needs to be approached.
by the way- if deemed some type of negligence was at play in some way- they will bill you- rem. the nut parents who had a kid lost in a fake balloon spacecraft--- they are still paying
But that's not what the parents keep saying. The parents keep saying the kids are perfectly capable.
Never mind!
Taking a 20 foot boat out to sea is a VERY high risk proposition. Attempting to take it 40 miles into the ocean is beyond comprehensible. Somehow that message was never communicated.

My fair home country of Denmark has started charging for Air Rescue helicopter rides in egregious cases - each year, they fish (mostly German) tourists out of the North Sea, after they set off on windsurfers or air mattresses. OTOH, I'd rather people call for help than risk their lives to avoid a bill, so there has to be some sort of balance.

While there should be some penalty for reckless behavior on the water (and wilderness) I agree with you that I would rather have those in trouble use the rescue services without fear of being bankrupted.
I don't fully understand the economics of the Coast Guard but based on my limited military experience it would seem the money being used for a rescue was already spent. That is salaries and equipment that would sit static otherwise.
I am more concerned about the safety of the rescuers than the economics. Putting others in danger for your lack of planning is another story.
I hope they find these idiots safe and sound
and I hope they make the parents pay for the search and rescue
be a thrill seeking dare devil on your OWN DAMNED DIME
Why should the parents be made to pay, if they'd set limits on how far the kids could go, but were deceived by the kids? It should be the kids who should have to get jobs to help pay for their own rescue. Or do community service, or something, if anything. Well, assuming they survive.

The kids are dead and the search will likely be suspended soon. It's sad but sometimes kids make poor decisions.
