People greatly desire to belong to something, and it isn't easy to do so in a large nation like the US. Throw on a jersey though, and for once in your life you have finally found your tribe. That's why people fight tooth and nail to be extorted by team owners.

You could explain the math to them and they wouldn't care. They're chumps.

You are right, but the issue is that news media helps this billionaire get away with corporate welfare to pay for their stadiums.
I have no problem becoming a fan of my local high school or college team.
The problem is that the local news media gives 100% of the attention to the NFL, MLB, NBA teams and almost zero attention to small local teams.

I follow a soccer team from Spain (Barcelona) and one from England (Arsenal) so I don't get screwed over paying for their stadiums and I can buy their jerseys for $20 each.

They're usually in on it too. Most local media organizations make a ton of money covering the local professional sports franchises.

You sell a boatload of newspapers if your team is in the playoffs. It's very much in the interest of the hometown newspapers, television, and radio stations to have multiple professional sports teams in their coverage area, and the better the stadium, the better the stories look.
