Thank God those words were never adopted into law. If that statement were taken literally, the U.S. would be some totalitarian state, and probably most of us on C-D wouldn't even be living here.
Please, nothing in that quote even comes close to totalitarianism.
You said "You shouldn't be embarrassed to know only one language when it is the language of the country you grew up in and reside in". Just because most speak English doesn't make it the language of the country. For a lot of people Spanish is their first language here.
Its not relevant because only 38 million speak Spanish here so you wouldn't be hearing it all the time unless you live in a Spanish majority area.
You can't assure us about the context because you aren't the woman.
Latino is used to refer to males. Latina is used to refer to females. Why not use mom since she is a mom with her son.
The child wouldn't have needed to say anything had the woman minded her own business. Why would I be okay with the ignorant old lady remarks? Being old and senile is an excuse.
Maybe because a lot of talk has been made about immigration by Trump. Maybe because the ignorant lady told his mom to go back to Spain, a place she isn't even from.
Congress declared English as our national language even though it is not our official language. If I moved to another country I would learn and speak the language of that country while still retaining my native language somewhat. I would make that country's language my primary language of usage though.
There are many areas especially in the southwest where many Hispanics reside. Highland Park is in Calif. so yes you would be hearing Spanish a lot of the time. I am not sure why that is though.
Why would anyone including that elderly woman care about what a stranger's conversation is about? That makes no sense. I know I don't care about what topic strangers are talking about.
I already expressed why I think the word mom was used rather than woman.
What child are you referring to? I believe that woman's son wasn't a child from the video. A child wouldn't make comments about voting. Illegal immigration is a separate topic from Spanish usage so I still don't get the son's remarks about not voting for Trump. You're right the woman wasn't from Spain but the Spanish language comes from Spain. I've heard some people say that white Americans should go back to Europe also. People say silly things all the time but they shouldn't.
If it is real, you ignore her comments, you don't start filming it and adding fuel to the fire(which is what the mother and son did).
Why ignore her comments? Why does the white lady get a pass? So a white person can say what they want to a minority and they get a pass because the right thing to do is ignore it?
Do you know how long minorities in the country have had to tolerate and ignore the crap that has been said and done to them?
No, no more. You don't get to butt into other people's lives and say ignorant, bigoted, rude, unnecessary things to them and just get "ignored" because it's the polite thing to do. The world needs to see and hear this stuff so that, if nothing else, bigoted people will keep their bigoted thoughts in their tiny, bigoted minds out of fear they'll end up on youtube.

We have a lot of languages here. It is not just English.

I know the area very well which is why I said if you are in a Spanish majority area.

The same reason why she cared that the family were having a private conversation among themselves and decided to inject her ignorance into it.

She is a mom out with her son, so why not

Trump has been talking about immigration so the son remark was a reaction to the ignorant woman remark about going back to Spain. What does a woman speaking Spanish among her family have to do with Spain? The Spanish spoken in Spain isn't the same Spanish.

Why bring race into this? If it had been an elderly black lady that had made those comments why would it be any different? This has nothing to do with minorities either. It's about foreign language usage. You do know that there are foreign white people here also that speak German, etc.?
And to that other poster. Just because there are some minority languages spoken here doesn't change the fact that our national, majority language is English.
Got to go now and I have lost interest in this topic. Just the same old comments over and over. I stated my case so that's it for me.

I looked at the guy and asked him in English--"are you jealous because you can only speak English, or ashamed that you aren't bright enough to learn another language?"
Apparently I was supposed to have just been shamed--he was shocked that I even spoke to him. He had no answer of course.
Trauma and shame are yours only if you accept them. I would have loved to have been with that family in the restaurant. The video would have turned out very different.
Good for you! I am the same when speaking spanish. I think language is such a beautiful thing and it's such a shame that people are shamed for it.

Because race has everything to do with this, why are you too uncomfortable to admit it. Why bring blacks into it? The reality is a lot of this has to do with race as with almost everything in this country and the more we realize it the sooner we can get on with life.

No, race has nothing to do with it. It's about language usage. What race are you referring to? Latina isn't a race. Why bring blacks into it? Because there was outrage only because the elderly lady was white, that's why. It's not me making it about race. You brought it up.
