I don't have a link atm because it's happening live.

The jury has been unable to reach the unanimous verdict needed for the death penalty.

He will be sentenced to life in prison without parole.

I don't agree with the death penalty, but I'm genuinely shocked that he didn't get the death penalty.

If he doesn't qualify for death then who does? Maybe if he were black.

Exactly^^^
If this was "Lil Ray Ray" or "Joe Joe" from South Jamaica Queens that did the shooting, they would of gave them a Quadruple Death penalty.

I'm for the DP, at least for 1) murder and 2) rape. I am for safeguards for the mentally ill, I think, however, I don't know how that's defined in the state of Colorado. That's a thread of its own.

I'm content with the decision, but respect those that aren't.

I live in Arapahoe County, and I'm just glad that the trial is over and that the survivors, the victims' families, and the jury can move on with their lives.

I think he may have gotten the death penalty if there wasn't real evidence that he's mentally ill.

I don't care whether his sentence was death or life - he's removed from society.

No surprise, really. Since the resumption of capital punishment in the United States in 1977, only three cases in Colorado have resulted in death sentences. I'm guessing that lingering doubts about the defendant's mental state in this case resulted in one or more of the jurors unwilling to go along with a death sentence.

Oh - Colorado has a violent crime rate lower than the national average and lower than most states that regularly execute people, so it seems like they're doing something right there.

Capital punishment appeals typically end up costing more than imprisoning someone for life. Also, the costs to house someone on a death row generally run about twice that of housing someone in a standard prison population. If you like capital punishment, that's fine - but if your concern is the taxpayer, capital punishment isn't the frugal option here.

Unlikely, unless federal prosecutors stepped in. There is no death penalty in New York State
