All these comments prove that this IS an issue that needs awareness raised. Menstruating is NOT dirty. It's a part of life and simple biology but in many countries is another way that women are excluded and marginalized.
Most women wouldn't choose to bleed down their legs. The point of this is that in some countries women lack other options and therefore can't fully participate in society, much less in sports.
Women spend almost a quarter of their lives (from 13-40ish) menstruating. I know idiots who won't even purchase feminine products for their spouse. Grow up!
It is dirty when you don't clean yourself up or keep yourself together. There is nothing "magical" about menstrual blood that makes it any cleaner that other blood or bodily fluids. It's never appropriate to go around in our society bleeding all over things.
Yes, yes...poor countries...there are ALWAYS poor countries. She wasn't in one.
Which tells me you've never actually watched a marathon. Diarrhea running down legs. Most people stop to clean up at some point, but the frontrunners? No way. They just keep going.
And Im certainly not about to start now that I see that numbskulls like this one and the ones you mention are the participants in them
If you read my initial post, I said the exact same thing as you did here.
My quote you posted here was speaking to those on this forum who don't realize how serious a problem this is for women and girls in poor countries. Her goal was to bring awareness of the issue to people in the west, but she went about it wrong. Since you didn't read my initial post:
I did read your post.
I don't think this was about women, I think this was all about the woman who ran the marathon.
I agree that a period is nothing to be embarrassed about. Any grown woman knows how to take care of that situation without formal feminine hygiene products. What she did is unhygienic and potentially spreads any diseases she might have.
Ok why not accomplish the rest of our natural bathroom functions as we run along? WAnut.
