A gorilla named Koko became famous for her ability to learnsign language in order to communicate with her keepers. Researchers at the University of Wisconsin-Madison say that she is now displaying signs of being capable of speech.

Traditionally, it has been believed that vocal performance by apes has been limited to spontaneous noise expressed, for instance, at shock of seeing a predator or to intimidate a fellow mammal in a fight.

It was believed that beyond this, apes lacked the cognitive capacity and breathing control to engage in organised and premeditated speech.
Gorillas are showing signs of learning to talk, say researchers - Science - News - The Independent

Wow that is fantastic. If she could really say words and they could be understood, it would be great.

Animals do talk in a certain way. Siamese cats are known to use different sounds for different needs to communicate. Mine would have a different sound for asking to be fed, for wanting to be petted, for playing etc. But that's their language. learning to speak ours would be really something.

I thought it was funny too when she broke a sink off a wall and blamed the cat, lol. Certainly a lot more self aware than folks give credit for.

Be careful what you wish for, you might not like what she has to say.

Funny how the gorilla has to learn OUR language, but we can't learn theirs. Gotta love humans.

Maybe we are not as smart as we think?

Dolphins are really smart and they have their own language that we have been trying to understand for years when what they are probably telling us is "Don't jump in the water there are Sharks OUT HERE!"
