It's weird. Maybe it's the smiles.....I don't know, but I do find it odd.

This used to be common, Memento Mori.

I worked for gubmint and one of the Mayors died before they could take his pic so they glued his eyelids open and yep, photographed his corpse, which still hangs proudly in Chambers.

They look so happy...

Maybe because it's the way they deal with grief, or the mom saying that it's the last pic with your dad, so smile, or because they know that they will not have to deal with the torment that he may have put them through while doped up.

Coming from a home where my parents were always doped up, I would be happy that the torment from them had stopped, not that they have killed themselves, but because the torment and abuse have stopped.

I think I am the only one who sees it this way. Everyone else just keeps repeating all the previous comments about the smiles.

Oh well.

I never understood open casket funerals. I feel it is a bit morbid. The last image I want burned in my mind is of a loved one dead in a casket. I prefer a closed casket with a picture of happier times of the person.

I remember starting Catholic school and being shocked when the nuns were all laughing at another nuns funeral.

Turns out, if you have Faith, you genuinely believe that person is in a better place.

So, >>happy.

No, I agree with you. I also think that most of these commenters haven't had their lives effected by addiction. It changes you, & how you perceive & present. It changes you forever.

I don't like the smiling aspect of it, it creeps me out.

I've had to deal with several addicts in my life. Didn't smile for photos at their funerals. I still think it's odd to be all smiles for a family photo with an open casket of your father.....don't care if he was a heroin addict or Ghandi. And she couldn't have been too miserable because she stayed with him through his addiction several times. She didn't seem to think to take the kids and get the hell out....instead she's standing there with big smiles next to his coffin....That's so messed up!
