I am a staunch defender of the Second Amendment and an advocate for common sense (ie: somewhat looser) gun laws here in New York but Jaggy brings up a really important point. I always ask how LEOs responding to a mass shooting will be able to distinguish between "good guys with guns" and "bad guys with guns"? Ive never gotten an answer ...
I firmly believe that the security of public places is best left to sworn law enforcement officers.
The good guy with a gun is the one with his hands empty and raised when the police arrive.

Forget the cops. How does someone else who comes along armed and ready to shoot, decide who to aim at? How does he know who the good guy and who the bad guy is?
I think if you're going to involve yourself in a shootout with someone, you better be prepared to be shot in turn by someone else who thinks he's going to rescue everybody.
[quote=Ralph_Kirk;41380320]Pretty much. If I'm with my family, for sure my primary and only concern for the moment is to get them out safely. Frankly, if the shooter is busy shooting someone else at the moment, that will give me a break to get my own family out while I'm making sure his attention is still directed elsewhere. I'm covering their escape, I am not going to do anything to draw his fire in the direction of my family.
As they get out the door, if I have a clear shot, I'll take it.[/quotAnd, yoy are psychic enough to know that he is concentrating on someone else.

Wow, I wish I had your super powers.
I would be armed and aiming center mass
Well, that's a silly remark.
If he's shooting in my direction, it won't take psychic powers to know it, and I'll be shooting back at him if that's the case. If he's not shooting in my direction, that won't take psychic powers to know either, and I'll be getting my family the hell out of Dodge.
This scares me, too. When there are stories here about mass shootings such as in the movie theatres, someone always says "too bad the movie goers weren't all armed" and I just think, yes, that would have made it so much better, 50 armed panicked people all shooting at once in a dark theater.
I'm not anti-gun, but I am glad NJ's laws are stricter.
I'm so very sorry. About living in NJ that is, I wouldn't wish that on anyone. Okay, maybe on a few people.
How do we know he was a "good guy with a gun"?
It will be interesting to find out if the guy had a license to carry a firearm.
If he was not properly licensed to carry, then he was not a "good guy" with a gun. He would be just another criminal. No matter his intentions.
It's lovely here, I'm sorry your perception is formed by media images of smoke stacks and crime. South Jersey remains the Garden State.
I have to inspect my vehicle on a regular basis to ensure there are no shell casings or other firearms related paraphernalia under a seat or something. No, NJ is not so great.

Sure, a good guy with a gun inadvertently shot this fellow in the head, but otherwise his vehicle could have been stolen right out from under him and the bad guys could have gotten away.
It's a car. Why would someone shoot someone over a damn car?!?!?
I assume the reason why criminals shoot people while steeling their cars is due to greed.
