One group was two couples who were clearly intoxicated, each accusing the other for their difficulty in getting to the gate. Another was three guys with backpacks who were moving at a pretty fast pace, late connection from Chicago, I believe. The third was a family with half a dozen kids. The husband didn't not speak English well. It appeared they had gotten confused on the gate number.

So in about half an hour, fifteen seats had to be rebooked. Not sure if American charged them additional fees or just found seats for them.

So even though the seats left empty, it was not pure profit for the airlines.
Selling seats that you KNOW aren't taken is different from what I am talking about.

Actually, we are talking about the same thing.

Airline overbook knowing that some of the seats will not be occupied by the passengers who bought them. Nonetheless they will still be required to provide transportation for these late passengers on another flight, so it is hardly pure profit. By booking them on later flights, they miss the possibility of last minute purchases.

However, this does not appear to be the situation in this case.

According to the latest report I could find, it was broken seat that started all the fuss.
