Americans are SUPER touchy about race, and it is really, really weird. No, don't tell me it's "because of a history of oppression" or other nonsense, all countries have oppressed peoples, yet they aren't as hung up as Americans. In Mexico you call people basically "fatty" or "darky" and it's totally innocuous; if you did that in the U.S. you would probably have your career destroyed and life ruined.
Not all Americans are sensitive about race. But, you have professional race baiters like Al Sharpton, Jesse Jackson and some others who try to make EVERYTHING in life about race. They don't believe your character matters, only your skin color.
And, unfortunately, they have a large group of followers, unable to think for themselves, who have bought into the notion that anything negative to happens to anyone of color is always because of that persons skin color.
Therefore, you have these young, impressionable Yalies, who think that because they, personally took offense to something, then it should be banned. And God forbid anyone should have a different opinion because the only appropriate reaction to that is to attack that person.
If you know what it means, why defend a boy darkening his skin to look like a rapper, then? He will be seen as wearing blackface, whether that was his intent or not. That is what his appearance conveys. However, it would say more about his parents' ignorance if they let him out of the house like that!

Correction: The AMERICAN LEFT is SUPER touchy about race. It's the ONLY thing they talk about anymore and ALL discussion must take place within the context and framework of race. It completely defines them and their absolute requirement for Identity Politics as the predicate to all human communication and interaction.

Who said anything about laws or can or can't? The school sent students an e-mail "asking them to be thoughtful" regarding their choice of costume. That hardly represents an assault on free speech.
The committee asked the school to send a concerned email. This was done.

After hearing the views of other students, a professor responds to the email acknowledging concerns but questioning the dictatorial content.

Students confront a second professor about the content of the first professor's email.
This is free speech.
Telling the professor he is not worth listening to.
Cutting off the professor's explanatory words with 'be quiet'.
Screaming profanities over the professors attempt to respond.
Calling for the sacking of both professors.
This is not free speech.
