First deputy attempted to deescalate the situation, and the suspect used the closed distance to shoot him in the head.
5 officers killed by gunfire six weeks into the year. Another deputy shot Tuesday in Grand Junction, CO, is expected to die today as well (like Sergeant Goodding in Seaside, OR, Deputy Geer attempted to use a taser first and was shot when the taser failed).
There were 3 officers killed by gunfire in the first six weeks of 2015 and 2014 combined.
Still not as bad as 2011 (where it was 10 officers killed by gunfire by this point), but not a good start to the year; especially considering that half the officers killed were shot in the head while attempting to use deescalation or less than lethal measures.
