Massachusetts.
Do you know how heavy those things are? Very sad. She was a teacher.
Flying manhole cover kills Massachusetts teacher driving to work on I-93 | PennLive.com

Okay, it's 200 pounds and they are saying no one threw it. (I can't edit my title.) I heard about this when it happened. So what would cause that? Explosion? Gas build up? (no pun intended)

Last I checked they were looking into the cause and checking other manhole covers throughout the city.

Such a freak accident and awful story. I hope it was painless and quick for her but I imagine it would be. Hopefully she didn't see it coming at her.

Bizarre, freak accident.

I have seen objects on the road flip up into the air when hit or run over by a car. Video said it was the coldest morning of the year. Metal shrinks when it is cold. Perhaps the cover became loose. Maybe another car or truck in front of her hit it, causing it to flip up and she drove into it. Its about the only rational explanation I can think of.

Sometimes I think its just your time to go. No rhyme or reason. Crap happens.

20 years ago I remember a story where someone on I-75 in KY was killed when an idiot threw a tombstone over an overpass onto a coming car

Like, intentionally threw it at a car or just stupidly tossed it and it (obviously) happened to hit a car?

Does it really matter?

I'm just curious if the person saw a car and thought, "hmm, it would be fun to hit that car" or just was an idiot who thought it would be cool to toss a tombstone over an overpass without actually thinking "hm maybe I'll hit a car, perhaps this is a bad idea." In the first scenario, the person intends to hit a car, actually tries to do so, and in the second, they do something incredibly reckless, stupid, and dangerous, but don't have the intent in their mind to actually hurt someone although it is a big possibility.

You must always be on the lookout for hazards on the road and wear seat belts.

We had someone killed here when some punk kid threw a large piece of concrete from an overpass onto the interstate. Since then all the bridges have been rebuilt, and high fences line the bridges over the interstate. No one has been hit by anything since. Sorry this woman got killed in such a freakish way, and I hope no one was at fault for this. Someone would have to be driving very fast, and a very large truck, to dislodge something so heavy and cause it to go airborne.
