Legislation that would set a minimum age of 16 to get married in Virginia is one step closer to passage.

The Virginia Senate on Thursday voted 32-8 to advance House Bill 703 at the urging of Sen. Jill Holtzman Vogel, R-Fauquier, who said current marriage laws "are not protecting children."

I think the 8 need to be investigated.

Most states allow for under-18 marriages with the consent of a parent or a judge. Some have low age limits, or no limit at all, in such cases. The legal marriageable age has generally been increasing over time.

In 1880, the highest minimum age for marriage was 12, in several states. Most states set it at 10. Delaware had it at 7.

Personally, I'd be in favor it just raising it to 18 altogether.

According to the age of sexual consent in most states, no.

Remember when that 16 year old Courtney Stodden married that like 53 year old actor a few years ago and it made headlines? If a 16 year old REALLY wants to get married, then whatever, but at the least I hope it's not to some 50 year old creep. It just seems so wrong for someone so young to marry someone SO much older. Very inappropriate but that girl has been exploited and seems to have a few screws loose.

Do I think marriages between teens or a teen and a young 20-something will last in this day and age? Little to no chance. There are some circumstances that I can understand a marriage that young - teen pregnancy, emancipation (rare but why can't a legally independent teen be married?) for example - but I think pretty much anyone who gets married too young is in over their heads nowadays. And yeah I think 16 is pretty much the lowest age I personally would be remotely okay with a teen marrying at.

Blows my mind that people can die for their country and get married and breed yet still not be able to have a beer!

What a boring reception that would be. Guess they'll just have to smoke weed.
