I agree.

When I see SIKHS ATTACKED BECAUSE THEY WERE MISTAKEN FOR MUSLIMS, my first response isn't "Hey, we have a problem here - and it's that some people can't tell Sikh from Muslim!".

The problem is the attack, period.

(the cultural ignorance is lamentable, but it pales in comparison to the attack)

As for the work at the Sikh Temple, it should be noted that that is a minority of the 'community service' sentence. I don't think that part is service to the community, per se, but I do think it is appropriate as a form of restitution to the organization victimized by the vandalism.

There is no need to write "not related to Islam". Any kind of vandalism or anti-social behaviour, whether it is related or not to Islam, should not be tolerated. The punishment is very lenient. In this country, one can go to Prison for years for such a crime.
