I know a great grandmother who was in her 40s. And I also know many people take what child care they can get, happily. I am sure now they are rethinking it all.
Whoa. How old are Grandparent, Parent, and Child???
I wonder if this was supposed to be a barrier to keep out kids but these kids were small enough to squeeze through.
"They entered the neighbor's yard through an open gate and climbed or squeezed through a 4-foot high wrought iron fence surrounding the pool, Gomez said."
And this. Who left the garage door open?!
The children were last seen in a room with access to a garage that had its door open. Investigators believe the toddlers left their home through the garage and walked to the neighbor's house.
When my son was 3, he could open the garage door all by himself.
No one had to leave it open.
What someone needed to do was watch these kids like a hawk.
It's that age (my kids are that age now - 4,2) where they are physically able to do stuff but don't have great judgment or concepts of consequences.
I think that ends around...30?
My kids hang out with my parents some times, and they didn't bother to baby proof (like door handle covers, gated off areas) so I did it for them.
This makes my heart hurt so badly! But there is so much wrong with this story... so much negligence... If the children had wandered out before, why weren't deadbolts or high latches installed on the doors? The neighbor with the pool should have done more to safeguard her yard. When we installed a pool, we also installed a 6 foot privacy fence with locks on both gates, specifically so that the free-range neighborhood kids couldn't wander inside. How did anyone wait an hour before calling the police for two missing TODDLERS?! This is just so sad May those poor babies rest in peace.
Why was it the neighbor's responsibility to safe guard the pool? It is not their responsibility to childproof their yard because their neighbor can not properly watch a child. We do not know how well the neighbors knew each other they could have not known that the grandma was watching the kids. Expecting others to change their yard or house because you can not be a responsible parent or guardian is unfair.
