Well, you're right that the National Enquirer isn't a 'sport'. Not sure what your point is there, because it's not even remotely relevant to the issue at hand.

You really think that this...

...pretends to be real more than does this?

Then I think you seriously need to rethink things.

Seriously.

When one buys those tabloids, there is a tacit understanding that the reader will engage in the "suspension of disbelief".

The tabloids is just like with talk radio as usually they get the "older crowd". Not always but a good many of those who buy such stuff are older. Guess it could be worse. About ten years ago in my hometown we had a retired school teacher who after reading in the National Enquirer about how Madonna's kids doesn't have access to TV and radio ( that is per-Madonna ) plus never takes her kids to McDonalds she took her social security check and actually went out to get them a TV and radio as well as a gift card from McDonalds. Everybody in town thought the lady was nuts but she really believed that she was doing the right thing since according to the paper at the time she had said "..all kids love McDonalds and TV".. I have doubts Madonna gave her kids such stuff from this woman though.

About 25 years ago there actually was the Weekly World News the TV show. Edwin Newman was the host. Yes they had Batboy stories as well as Ratgirl plus Ed Anger, Rex Winston ( a TV critic that HATES TV ), "Dear Dotti" who was the anti-Ann Landers/Dear Abby such as telling a woman thinking about suicide "..just take those damn pills !" . After all these years there were some stories I can still remember such as that health club the encouraged cigarette smoking or that town that instead of having garbage men they had young girls in bikinis instead picking up trash. I guess this didn't air in a lot of places since few remember it.
