WHAT'S TRUE: United Airlines introduced a fare class called "Basic Economy," which permits one personal item, but restricts an additional carry-on bag.
WHAT'S FALSE: No portion of the fare's terms restricts the use of overhead bins; the luggage restriction applies only to a small class of travelers opting in to the fare.
Yeah, this sounds like a cluster blank. I have never observed any sort of orderly fashion to the bin usage. People use whatever bin is open, regardless of where their seat is half the time. Sounds like a real poor idea....and I do not see how they will be able to enforce it...People who pay this extra will be mad when they don't have a spot to use.
My luggage goes above my seat. If something is already there, I call the flight attendant to find a place for it. It helps that I use one reasonably sized carry-on and check the rest of my luggage.
She loves it because she can face the sloped end towards her and it makes a perfect foot rest. Granted she has short legs.
I use a leather duffel as a carry-on. I stick my camera and lenses and anything else I absolutely don't want checked in a small crossbody bag (sometimes a messenger) and I stick that in my duffel along with a change of clothes and whatever else I prefer to not check. Then if I am forced to check my bag I pop out my crossbody and it counts as a personal item not a carry-on.
They aren't going to lower any prices. They are going to sell the new Basic Economy for $300 (in your scenario) and raise the prices for the other Economy tickets. This is an attempt to move people into higher fare buckets.
No one said they are going to lower prices. Moreover, UA has not announced an increase in other ticket fares. Again, I think it is a bit premature to get worked up over a hypothetical price increase that has not been announced. Ultimately prices are going to reflect customer demand and airline costs.
I think it's outrageous that they're charging for every luggage storage option there is.
Why in the world is it outrageous? I can't think of a single reason. You're free to buy a higher fare ticket where it is bundled.
You're anti-corporation, of course, but in this case I can't think of a reason that charging for a service is unreasonable. Each person makes a choice based on their own budget and desires.

They should get rid of flight attendants. Maybe just have one flight attendant to help with takeoff and landing. Everyone is able to buy their food/drinks at a kiosk near their gate. Have a credit card vending machine
Most travelers dont read and are stuck in the good ole days of the airlines and the airlines know this.
Buy a ticket on Expedia, Orbitz, etc., it will say additional fees for baggage, but many will NOT continue to see what the actual allowable bag size is and just be happy they saved $20-50 for the ticket and the hell we see at the gates, is to come.
Ive told many that I travel with the to check the actual allowable size is for their carry on bag, but they think their big bag with wheels can go in the overhead bin even though its 2-3 inches too big and get pissed because they are stuck in the old days, because it what they used 5-10yrs ago.
I know many of us have passed by Spirit and Froniters gate and people are pissed and sometimes swearing because they have to pay $60-100 to carry on their bag, because they didnt know they couldnt or its too big or when one of the big 3 are charging a passenger for bringing a carry on bad that is too big.
Why? If Ticket A costs $200 plus $50 in checked bag fees, and Ticket B comes with a free checked bag but costs $275, even with the bag fee Ticket A is cheaper. If all other things are equal, why wouldn't you choose Ticket A?
If Ticket A is on an airline that nickles and dimes you for everything and makes you pay more than the cost of the ticket to make a date change and their attendants are rude and it's just a downright miserable experience, but if Ticket B is on an airline that treats their passengers as customers to be served, rather than as impositions to be tolerated . . . that's why. All other things are rarely equal.

The irony is that the "good old days" they are stuck in haven't been around for nearly a decade. American Airlines introduced the first checked bag fees in 2008.
