Tipping $500 at Waffle House is the opposite of a class act -- that's the most redneck thing I've heard all month, and this is July, the month of the redneck.
So rednecks are extremely generous, and class acts, being the opposite, must be avaricious tightwads. Got it.

He was in the ghetto, not the land of the rednecks.
Probably nothing much. It feels good to make someone's day.
A few years ago at Christmas, I was in line behind a young woman who was buying some inexpensive gifts for a bunch of young children. Some were games, and she didn't have enough cash to buy all 5 of them, so she asked the counter gal to take one back.
It was only $15. I just said I would cover it, so charge it on my little bill and give the game to her. The gratitude I got from the young lady was enormous, more than I expected. The counter girl said I had made her very happy too.
I just wanted some little kids to have some presents with no one left out. It made me feel very good to do it.
I'm sure that was the same impulse than made Donnie do what he did. He saw a hard-working person who he thought could use a little extra help, so he did what he could do. I don't think I would have gone as far as he did, but then, I don't have that kind of money, either.
That $500 of his didn't hurt him any more than the $15 I spent hurt me. The generosity is the thing. It feels good, especially so unexpectedly.

Are you emerald with jealousy?
I'm sure the WH staff appreciated the extra moolah.
Funny that you know who his partner is yet didn't know he was rich?
Singer from the New Kids on the Block & actor on Blue Bloods will make you rich!
Being of the age to have been a diehard NKOTB fan (Donnie was not my guy ), they grossed around $200 million as a group back in the late 80s-early 90s. They've been touring extensively since 2010. As a group they generate about $15 million yearly with touring and associated merchandising, etc.
He does movies, tv, reality shows. I have to say, he's the one with the most successful career (and talent) post-NKOTB. And he seems to be a generally decent guy.
Donnie also has several various business interests, including Wahlburgers (in partnership with brothers Mark & Paul). It's expanded pretty rapidly into a chain across the US.
