NASA efforts to catalogue NEOs are commendable, but not sufficient, and hardly count as an early warning system (even NASA admits that). For example, we have absolutely no coverage of any asteroids coming from the direction of the sun, such as the Chelyabinsk asteroid that hit Russia recently. NASA is doing this under the guise of scientific research, but it is not the agency to carry out full blown early warning system/planetary protection. it is not a NASA mission, nor do they have the funding to do it properly.

The Air Force can't do any better. And it is a NASA mission to locate and catalog all they can.
No need to worry. NASA has formed PDCO ---Planetary Defense Coordination Office. We are protected from asteroids. It's time to focus on shooting Laser guns at space objects from our game consoles.
